Welcome to Lesson 36! Surah Abasa opens with one of the most striking moments of divine correction in the entire Quran. The Prophet ﷺ, in his eagerness to bring the Quraysh nobles to Islam, momentarily turned away from a sincere blind seeker of knowledge, Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum. Allah immediately revealed verses gently rebuking this — not because the Prophet ﷺ did anything sinful, but to establish a permanent principle: sincerity outweighs status, and the one who comes seeking guidance out of genuine fear of Allah deserves full attention, regardless of his worldly rank.
The Surah then expands outward — from this one encounter to humanity's ingratitude in general, tracing our origin from a mere drop of fluid, our reliance on Allah's provision through rain and soil, and finally the Day when even the closest family will flee from one another, with faces either bright with joy or covered in dust and gloom.

Why This Correction Matters So Much
What makes this Surah so profound is not the mistake itself — a momentary lapse in social priority — but Allah's response to it. He does not excuse His beloved Messenger ﷺ because of his rank; He corrects him plainly, teaching every generation after that sincerity in seeking knowledge deserves honor above all worldly status, wealth, or social standing. Ibn Umm Maktum later became so beloved that the Prophet ﷺ would say, whenever he saw him, “welcome to the one for whose sake my Lord reproached me.”

Notice verses 1–2 speak of the Prophet ﷺ in third person (“he frowned”), while from verse 3 onward Allah addresses him directly (“what would make you know”) — scholars note this shift softens the correction, moving from describing the act to gently, directly guiding the heart.

Surah Abasa is unique among the Quran's Surahs as a direct correction of the Prophet ﷺ himself, teaching every believer that sincerity of heart outweighs any worldly consideration. Reciting it regularly cultivates humility, gratitude for divine provision, and mindfulness of the Day when family bonds will offer no shelter.
Ibn Umm Maktum's Legacy
After this revelation, the Prophet ﷺ would honor Ibn Umm Maktum greatly, twice appointing him to lead Madinah in his absence, and saying whenever he saw him: “Welcome to the one for whose sake my Lord reproached me.” He was later martyred at the Battle of Qadisiyyah, carrying the banner while reciting this very Surah.
