Surah An-Naziat opens with five powerful oaths, traditionally understood to refer to the angels involved in taking souls at death — pulling forth the souls of the wicked violently, and drawing out the souls of the believers gently. The Surah then turns to the story of Musa (Moses) being sent to Fir'awn (Pharaoh), who arrogantly claimed to be the highest lord, and was seized by Allah as a lesson for those who reflect. It closes describing the Greater Catastrophe (At-Tammah al-Kubra) — the Day when every soul will see clearly what it strove for, and Hell or Paradise will be the only two destinations.

Welcome to Lesson 37! بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
١
وَالنَّازِعَاتِ غَرْقًا
Wa-n-nazi‘ati gharqa
“By those [angels] who pull out violently.”
٢
وَالنَّاشِطَاتِ نَشْطًا
Wa-n-nashiṭati nashta
“And those who draw out gently.”
٣
وَالسَّابِحَاتِ سَبْحًا
Wa-s-sabiḥati sabḥa
“And those who glide swiftly.”
٤
فَالسَّابِقَاتِ سَبْقًا
Fa-s-sabiqati sabqa
“And those who race ahead.”
٥
فَالْمُدَبِّرَاتِ أَمْرًا
Fa-l-mudabbirati amra
“And those who direct [each] matter.”
٦
يَوْمَ تَرْجُفُ الرَّاجِفَةُ
Yawma tarjufu r-rajifah
“The Day the quaking one quakes.”
٧
تَتْبَعُهَا الرَّادِفَةُ
Tatba‘uha r-radifah
“Followed by the subsequent one.”
٨
قُلُوبٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَاجِفَةٌ
Qulubun yawma'idhin wajifah
“Hearts, that Day, will tremble.”
٩
أَبْصَارُهَا خَاشِعَةٌ
Abṣaruha khashi‘ah
“Their eyes downcast.”

يَقُولُونَ أَإِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِي الْحَافِرَةِ
Yaquluna a-inna la-mardununa fi l-ḥafirah
“They say: will we indeed be returned to our former state?”

أَإِذَا كُنَّا عِظَامًا نَّخِرَةً
A-idha kunna ‘iẓaman nakhirah
“Even after we are decayed bones?”
١٢
قَالُوا تِلْكَ إِذًا كَرَّةٌ خَاسِرَةٌ
Qalu tilka idhan karratun khasirah
“They say: that then would be a losing return.”
١٣
فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ زَجْرَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ
Fa-innama hiya zajratun waḥidah
“Indeed, it will be but one shout.”
١٤
فَإِذَا هُم بِالسَّاهِرَةِ
Fa-idha hum bi-s-sahirah
“And suddenly they are on the [open] plain.”
١٥
هَلْ أَتَاكَ حَدِيثُ مُوسَىٰ
Hal ataka ḥadithu Musa
“Has the story of Musa reached you?”
١٦
إِذْ نَادَاهُ رَبُّهُ بِالْوَادِ الْمُقَدَّسِ طُوًى
Idh nadahu rabbuhu bi-l-wadi l-muqaddasi ṭuwa
“When his Lord called him in the sacred valley of Tuwa.”
١٧
اذْهَبْ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّهُ طَغَىٰ
Idhhab ila Fir‘awna innahu ṭagha
“Go to Fir'awn; indeed, he has transgressed.”
١٨
فَقُلْ هَل لَّكَ إِلَىٰ أَن تَزَكَّىٰ
Fa-qul hal laka ila an tazakka
“And say: would you purify yourself?”
١٩
وَأَهْدِيَكَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَتَخْشَىٰ
Wa-ahdiyaka ila rabbika fa-takhsha
“And I will guide you to your Lord so you would fear Him?”
٢٠
فَأَرَاهُ الْآيَةَ الْكُبْرَىٰ
Fa-arahu l-ayata l-kubra
“And he showed him the greatest sign.”
٢١
فَكَذَّبَ وَعَصَىٰ
Fa-kadhdhaba wa-‘aṣa
“But he denied and disobeyed.”
٢٢
ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ يَسْعَىٰ
Thumma adbara yas‘a
“Then he turned his back, striving [against truth].”
٢٣
فَحَشَرَ فَنَادَىٰ
Fa-ḥashara fa-nada
“And he gathered [his people] and called out.”
٢٤
فَقَالَ أَنَا رَبُّكُمُ الْأَعْلَىٰ
Fa-qala ana rabbukumu l-a‘la
“And said: I am your lord, most high.”
٢٥
فَأَخَذَهُ اللَّهُ نَكَالَ الْآخِرَةِ وَالْأُولَىٰ
Fa-akhadhahu llahu nakala l-akhirati wa-l-ula
“So Allah seized him with the punishment of this life and the Hereafter.”
٢٦
إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَعِبْرَةً لِّمَن يَخْشَىٰ
Inna fi dhalika la-‘ibratan li-man yakhsha
“Indeed in that is a lesson for whoever fears [Allah].”
٢٧
أَأَنتُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا أَمِ السَّمَاءُ بَنَاهَا
A-antum ashaddu khalqan ami s-sama'u banaha
“Are you more difficult to create, or the heaven He built?”
٢٨
رَفَعَ سَمْكَهَا فَسَوَّاهَا
Rafa‘a samkaha fa-sawwaha
“He raised its ceiling and proportioned it.”
٢٩
وَأَغْطَشَ لَيْلَهَا وَأَخْرَجَ ضُحَاهَا
Wa-aghṭasha laylaha wa-akhraja ḍuhaha
“And darkened its night and brought out its brightness.”
٣٠
وَالْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ دَحَاهَا
Wa-l-arḍa ba‘da dhalika daḥaha
“And the earth, after that, He spread out.”
٣١
أَخْرَجَ مِنْهَا مَاءَهَا وَمَرْعَاهَا
Akhraja minha ma'aha wa-mar‘aha
“He brought forth from it its water and its pasture.”
٣٢
وَالْجِبَالَ أَرْسَاهَا
Wa-l-jibala arsaha
“And the mountains He anchored firmly.”
٣٣
مَتَاعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَامِكُمْ
Mata‘an lakum wa-li-an‘amikum
“Provision for you and your livestock.”
٣٤
فَإِذَا جَاءَتِ الطَّامَّةُ الْكُبْرَىٰ
Fa-idha ja'ati ṭ-ṭammatu l-kubra
“Then when the Greater Catastrophe comes.”
٣٥
يَوْمَ يَتَذَكَّرُ الْإِنسَانُ مَا سَعَىٰ
Yawma yatadhakkaru l-insanu ma sa‘a
“The Day man will remember what he strove for.”
٣٦
وَبُرِّزَتِ الْجَحِيمُ لِمَن يَرَىٰ
Wa-burrizati l-jaḥimu li-man yara
“And Hellfire will be displayed for whoever sees.”
٣٧
فَأَمَّا مَن طَغَىٰ
Fa-amma man ṭagha
“As for one who transgressed.”
٣٨
وَآثَرَ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا
Wa-athara l-ḥayata d-dunya
“And preferred the worldly life.”
٣٩
فَإِنَّ الْجَحِيمَ هِيَ الْمَأْوَىٰ
Fa-inna l-jaḥima hiya l-ma'wa
“Indeed, Hellfire will be [his] refuge.”
٤٠
وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِ وَنَهَى النَّفْسَ عَنِ الْهَوَىٰ
Wa-amma man khafa maqama rabbihi wa-naha n-nafsa ‘ani l-hawa
“But as for one who feared standing before his Lord and restrained the self from desire.”
٤١
فَإِنَّ الْجَنَّةَ هِيَ الْمَأْوَىٰ
Fa-inna l-jannata hiya l-ma'wa
“Indeed, Paradise will be [his] refuge.”
٤٢
يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ السَّاعَةِ أَيَّانَ مُرْسَاهَا
Yas'alunaka ‘ani s-sa‘ati ayyana mursaha
“They ask you about the Hour: when will it occur?”
٤٣
فِيمَ أَنتَ مِن ذِكْرَاهَا
Fima anta min dhikraha
“In what [position] are you that you should mention it?”
٤٤
إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ مُنتَهَاهَا
Ila rabbika muntahaha
“To your Lord is its finality [of knowledge].”
٤٥
إِنَّمَا أَنتَ مُنذِرُ مَن يَخْشَاهَا
Innama anta mundhiru man yakhshaha
“You are only a warner for whoever fears it.”
٤٦
كَأَنَّهُمْ يَوْمَ يَرَوْنَهَا لَمْ يَلْبَثُوا إِلَّا عَشِيَّةً أَوْ ضُحَاهَا
Ka-annahum yawma yarawnaha lam yalbathu illa ‘ashiyyatan aw ḍuhaha
“It will be as if, the Day they see it, they had not remained except an evening or a morning.”
