🌈 Five Oaths — Three Destroyed Nations — Trial of Wealth — Yā Ayyatuhā n-Nafs
Surah Al-Fajr opens with five majestic oaths by sacred times leading to a question: is there not in this an oath for one with reason? Then three destroyed nations — 'Ād, Thamūd, Fir'awn — prove that Allah is ever-watchful. The Surah diagnoses the human being's spiritual disease: confusing wealth with honour. Finally it closes with the most beautiful address in Juz Amma: “Yā ayyatuhā n-nafsul-mu'ma'inna — O soul at peace, return to your Lord, pleased and pleasing. Enter My paradise.”

Welcome to Lesson 27! Surah Al-Fajr is the longest Surah in our series so far at 30 verses. It moves from the cosmic (five oaths by sacred times) to the historical (three destroyed civilisations) to the psychological (the human response to honour and calamity) to the deeply personal (the final call to the soul at peace).

The most famous verses are v.27–30 — where Allah speaks directly to the tranquil soul: “Yā ayyatuhā n-nafsul-mu'ma'inna / Irji'ī ilā rabbiki rāḍiyatan marḍiyyah / Fadkhulī fī 'ibādī / Wadkhulī jannati.” These four verses are recited at funerals across the Muslim world — a farewell and a divine promise.

The Ten Nights (Layalin 'Ashr) — The Most Sacred Days of the Year

Classical scholars overwhelmingly identified the ten nights as the first ten days/nights of Dhul-Hijjah. The Prophet ﷺ confirmed in Sahih Bukhari: “There are no days on which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days.” These include the Day of Arafah (9th Dhul-Hijjah — the greatest day of the year) and Eid al-Adha. Allah swears by them in the Quran, establishing their unique rank above all other days. If you want to perform the best deeds of the year, do them in the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah.

Radiyatan Mardiyyah — Pleased AND Pleasing

V.28 uses two participles together: radiyah (she is pleased — active) + mardiyyah (Allah is pleased with her — passive). Both simultaneously. The soul returns to Allah satisfied with everything He gave — the tests, the hardships, the gifts — AND Allah is pleased with her. Mutual pleasure between Creator and servant. This is the highest possible state: not just pardoned, not just rewarded — but mutually, completely, reciprocally pleased. This is what the believer's life is building toward from the very first day.

وَالْفَجْرِ · هَلْ فِي ذَلِكَ قَسَمٌ
Wa-l-fajri / Wa-layalin ashr / Wa-sh-shaf'i wa-l-watr / Wa-l-layli idha yasr / Hal fi dhalika qasamun li-dhi hijr
“By the dawn. By the ten nights. By the even and the odd. By the night when it passes. Is there not in that an oath for one possessing reason?”
Four oaths by sacred times building to a challenge. Al-fajr: the first crack of dawn — the most hopeful point of the night cycle. Layalin ashr: the ten nights of Dhul-Hijjah, confirmed by hadith as the most beloved days to Allah. Shaf' and watr: even and odd covering all of creation. Al-layl idha yasr: the night when it departs — the end of darkness is itself worth swearing by. V.5 “hal fi dhalika qasamun li-dhi hijr”: is this not enough for one who uses their reason (hijr = rational restraint)? For those with reason: yes — the cosmic signs testify. For those without: no evidence is ever enough.

“Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with 'Ad, Iram of the pillars, the like of which had not been created? And Thamud who carved the rock in the valley? And Pharaoh of the pegs? Who all were excessive in the lands and spread corruption — so your Lord poured upon them the whip of punishment. Indeed your Lord is truly in wait.”
Three civilisations, one pattern, one verdict. 'Ad: greatest ancient civilisation, their city Iram had lofty pillars unlike anything on earth. Destroyed by a wind after arrogance. Thamud: met them in Ash-Shams (L25) — carved mountains. Destroyed for slaughtering the she-camel. Fir'awn dhi l-awtad: Pharaoh of the pegs — his torture method or the power anchoring his empire. Greatest political force of the ancient world. Drowned. All three pattern: taghaw (excessive) + aktharū l-fasad (spread corruption). V.13: Sawta l-adhab — the “whip of punishment” — sudden, lashing, complete. V.14: La-bi-l-mirsad — your Lord is truly in the watchtower, watching all and awaiting the moment. Power and empire have never and will never escape this watch.

The human spiritual disease diagnosed. The false equation: wealth = divine love, poverty = divine rejection. Both wrong — both are tests from Allah. Kalla (No!): emphatic rejection of this thinking. Then four charges that reveal what TRULY measures a person: (1) Not honouring the orphan — the vulnerable individual. (2) Not even encouraging others to feed the poor — the standard is not just personal giving but community mobilisation. (3) Devouring inheritance greedily — consuming what others have rights in. (4) Loving wealth with jammā (intense, heaped-up love). The disease: making wealth the lens through which everything including divine relationship is judged.

Dakkan dakka (v.21): doubled for total emphasis — the earth utterly levelled, nothing standing. V.22: Wa-ja'a rabbuka: your Lord comes — one of the most awe-inspiring verses in the Quran, affirmed as a divine attribute without likening to creation. Angels in perfect ranks. V.23: hellfire brought forth, humanity finally remembers. But wa-anna lahu dh-dhikra — what good does remembering do NOW? V.24: Ya laytani qaddamtu li-hayati: the greatest regret — if only I had sent ahead for my REAL life. He now recognises the akhirah as the true life. V.25–26: no punishment like Allah's, no binding like His. The Day silences all arrogance forever.

“O soul at peace! Return to your Lord, pleased and pleasing. Enter among My servants. Enter My paradise.”
The four most beautiful verses in Juz Amma. Al-mutma'inna: the soul that found its complete rest and assurance in Allah while still in this world. This peace was built through a lifetime of faith, prayer, and trust — not granted after death without effort. Irji'ī ila rabbiki: return to YOUR Lord — the possessive makes it intimate and personal. Radiyatan mardiyyah: two perfect simultaneous states — she is pleased (active) with everything Allah gave AND Allah is pleased (passive) with her. Mutual pleasure. The highest possible conclusion to a human life. Fadkhuli fi 'ibadi: enter My servants — the intimate righteous circle of Allah's beloved. Wadkhuli jannati: enter MY paradise — the possessive ya is the greatest honour possible. Allah gives His own paradise directly, personally, to this soul.

Three Destroyed Nations — One Pattern

ثلاث أمم مهلكة
🏏️
عَادٌ
'AD OF IRAM
Most powerful ancient civilisation. City of Iram with lofty pillars unlike anything on earth. Arrogant strength. Destroyed by a devastating wind. Power means nothing before Allah.
⛏️
ثَمُودَ
THAMŪD
Carved mountains and built in the valley. Elite builders. Slaughtered the she-camel of Allah despite Prophet Salih's warning. Destroyed by a mighty blast. Skill means nothing before Allah.
👑
فِرْعَوْنَ
FIR'AWN
Pharaoh of the pegs — greatest political empire of the ancient world. Denied Moses ﷺ, enslaved a people, claimed divinity. Drowned in the Red Sea. Empire means nothing before Allah.
🌈

The One Pattern: Taghaw + Fasad → Destruction

All three civilisations share the same two-word description: “alladhina taghaw fi l-bilad” (who were excessive in the lands) + “fa-aktharū fiha l-fasad” (and spread much corruption). The pattern is not about military defeat or economic failure — it is about moral excess and spreading corruption. And the verdict in v.14: “Inna rabbaka la-bi-l-mirsad” — your Lord is truly in wait. No civilisation, however great, has ever escaped or will ever escape this watch.

Lessons from Surah Al-Fajr

دروس سورة الفجر

🌈 5 Timeless Lessons

1
The ten nights of Dhul-Hijjah are the most precious days of the year: Allah swears by them in the Quran. The Prophet ﷺ confirmed: no righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than those done in these ten days. For those not performing Hajj: fast the first nine days (especially Day of Arafah), increase dhikr, give charity, pray Tahajjud. These ten nights are the year's greatest opportunity — do not let them pass idle.
2
Power, architecture, and empire have NEVER saved anyone from Allah's judgment: 'Ad had the greatest buildings in history. Thamud were master builders. Fir'awn had the greatest empire. All three destroyed. The pattern of taghaw (excess) + fasad (corruption) leads to destruction regardless of how powerful a civilisation appears. This is the historical proof presented before the psychological diagnosis of v.15–20.
3
Wealth and poverty are both tests — never signs of divine love or rejection: V.15–16 diagnoses the most common spiritual disease: using material outcomes to measure Allah's favour. When wealthy: “Allah loves me.” When poor: “Allah hates me.” Both wrong. Both are tests. The true measure is not what you have but what you do with it — honouring orphans, feeding the poor, sharing inheritance justly.
4
“Ya laytani qaddamtu li-hayati” — avoid the greatest regret: The man of regret on the Day of Judgment says: if only I had sent ahead for MY REAL life. He finally understands that the akhirah is the real life and this world was the chance to prepare for it. Every good deed done today is sent ahead. Every opportunity missed is a regret stored for that day. Act now, while the sending-ahead is still possible.
5
Build the nafs mutma'inna now — while you are alive: The soul called “at peace” in v.27 is the soul that found its rest in Allah DURING this life — through prayer, dhikr, trust (tawakkul), and returning to Allah in all things. The address is given at death — but the peace that qualifies the soul for it must be built NOW, one prayer and one act of trust at a time.

Virtues & When to Recite Al-Fajr

فضائل السورة

🌈 When to Recite

🌈
During the first ten nights of Dhul-Hijjah: Recite Al-Fajr abundantly during these blessed nights. Allah swears by them — every act of worship in this period carries incomparable reward. Make Al-Fajr your nightly recitation during Dhul-Hijjah as a connection to the very days Allah swears by.

At funerals and for the dying: V.27–30 (Ya ayyatuha n-nafsu l-mutma'inna) are traditionally recited over the dying and at burials across the Muslim world. They are a farewell, a supplication, and a divine promise to every believing soul returning to its Lord.
☀️
After Fajr prayer as a morning connection: Reciting Surah Al-Fajr after the Fajr prayer creates a connection between the dawn you prayed in and the dawn Allah swears by. Begin the day with the reminder: Allah is in wait, history witnesses, and your soul is being built toward peace.

Memorize Al-Fajr in 35 Minutes

احفظ سورة الفجر
1

Structure: 5 Oaths (v.1–5) → Three Nations (v.6–14) → Trial of Wealth (v.15–20) → Day of Judgment (v.21–26) → Ya Ayyatuha (v.27–30)

Five sections. The last four verses (v.27–30) are the most famous and most rewarding to memorise — learn them first to stay motivated, then work backwards.

2

Verses 27–30 FIRST: Ya Ayyatuha n-Nafs (4 verses)

Ya ayyatuha n-nafsu l-mutma'inna / Irji'ī ila rabbiki radiyatan mardiyyah / Fadkhuli fi 'ibadi / Wadkhuli jannati. Each verse is short. V.29–30 are only 3–4 words each. Madd Aarid on jannati. Repeat 25 times until it is in your heart before your tongue.

💕 Learn these four verses first — they will give you energy for the rest of the Surah.
3

Verses 1–5: Four Oaths + Challenge

V.1: Wa-l-fajri. V.2: Wa-layalin ashr. V.3: Wa-sh-shaf'i wa-l-watr. V.4: Wa-l-layli idha yasr. V.5: Hal fi dhalika qasamun li-dhi hijr. All four oaths begin with “wa-” locking them together. V.5 is the longest — take time. Repeat 15 times.

4

Verses 6–26: Three Nations + Trial + Judgment

V.6–14: Three nations ('Ad, Thamud, Fir'awn) with the common pattern: taghaw + fasad + destroyed. V.15–20: the wealth diagnosis (akramanī / ahanam / kalla). V.21–26: Day (dakkan dakka / ja'a rabbuka / ya laytani). The section is long — take it in three sittings of 10 minutes each.

⏱️ Total: 35 minutes across multiple sessions. Al-Fajr at 30 verses rewards patient, consistent revision.

🌈
The Dawn Oath Activity: "Allah swears by the DAWN in this Surah! The dawn is the moment the sky starts getting light after the dark night. Ask children: have you ever watched the sky just before sunrise? What does it feel like to see the first light come? Allah says that special moment is worth swearing by! It reminds us: no matter how dark things get, the light always comes back."
🏏️
The Three Strong People Story: "Allah tells us about three very powerful groups in history: the people of 'Ad (they built the biggest buildings), Thamud (they carved mountains!), and Pharaoh (who had the biggest army). Were they safe because they were so powerful? NO! They were all destroyed because they were arrogant and did bad things. Ask children: does being strong mean you are safe from Allah? What REALLY keeps us safe?"
💰
The Wealth Test Lesson: "Allah says some people think: when I have money, Allah loves me. When I don't have money, Allah hates me. Is that right? NO! Allah says Kalla — Not at all! Both having money and not having money are TESTS. What matters is: do you help the orphan? Do you share your food? Do you give to others? THAT is what Allah is looking at!"
💕
Ya Ayyatuha n-Nafs for Children: "The most beautiful part of this Surah is when Allah says: O soul at peace — come home to Me! Imagine: at the end of your life, if you were good and kind and prayed and trusted Allah — Allah Himself says: come to Me, I am pleased with you, enter MY paradise! Ask children: what kind of person do you want to be? What will you do to make your soul ‘at peace’?"
