🌙 One Night That Changes Everything — Better Than 83 Years of Worship
Surah Al-Qadr is one of the most beloved Surahs in the entire Quran. In just 5 verses, it reveals a secret that transforms how a Muslim relates to the last ten nights of Ramadan: there is a single night hidden among them that is better than a thousand months of worship. The Quran descended on it. Angels fill the earth on it. It is peace, from its beginning until the break of dawn. Every believer who seeks it has a chance to earn more than 83 years of continuous worship in a single night.
Welcome to Lesson 19! Surah Al-Qadr was described by the Prophet ﷺ as one of the greatest gifts Allah gave to this Ummah. Earlier nations lived longer — some prophets' followers worshipped for hundreds of years. This Ummah has shorter lives on average. So Allah gave them one night worth more than a thousand months.
The Surah answers three questions in perfect sequence: What is Laylat al-Qadr? (v.1) → What makes it great? (v.2–4) → What is its nature? (v.5). Every Muslim should know this Surah by heart — and seek its night with everything they have.

Laylat al-Qadr
The night the Quran was first revealed. Also the night all decrees for the coming year are determined. Hidden in the last 10 nights of Ramadan — most likely in the odd nights.
Better Than 1,000 Months
Worship on this night = more reward than 83 years and 4 months of continuous worship. The Prophet ﷺ said this was given to this Ummah as a compensation for their shorter lifespans compared to earlier nations.
The Angels Descend
v.4: Angels AND the Ruh (Jibril ﷺ) descend on this night. This is one of the most extraordinary events that happens on earth — the angels filling the earth by Allah's permission.
Salam — Peace
v.5: “Salāmun hiya ḥattā maṭla'i l-fajr.” Peace — it is entirely peaceful from its beginning until the break of dawn. Scholars say even the evil jinn cannot act freely on this night.
Du'a of Laylat al-Qadr
The Prophet ﷺ taught A'isha (RA) to say: “Allāhumma innaka 'afwón tuḥibbu l-'afwa fa'fu 'annī” — O Allah, You are the Ever-Pardoning, You love to pardon, so pardon me. (Al-Tirmidhi, Sahih)
🌙
Why Is This Night Hidden?
The Prophet ﷺ said he was shown Laylat al-Qadr but then forgot it when two men were arguing, and it was taken away. He said: “Seek it in the last ten nights, in the odd nights.” (Bukhari). The wisdom scholars mention: if the night were known exactly, people would worship only that night. By hiding it, Allah ensures that believers strive across all ten nights — multiplying their worship and their reward. The uncertainty IS the gift.

Why Does “Qadr” Have Three Meanings — All Correct?
(1) Power: This night has immense divine power — the Quran descended, angels fill the earth. (2) Decree: Annual decrees are written — who will be born, who will die, what provision will be distributed. (3) Honour/Majesty: This night has the highest honour of the entire year. Classical scholars say all three meanings are intended simultaneously, layered into one word. This is one of the miracles of Quranic Arabic — a single word carrying a universe of meaning.

شرح الآيات آية آية
١
إِنَّا أَنْزَلْنَاهُ فِيْ لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ
Innā anzalnāhu fī laylati l-qadr
“Indeed We sent it down on the Night of Power.”
“Innā” — Indeed We. The royal plural of divine majesty. “Anzalnāhu” — We sent it down. The pronoun “it” refers to the Quran — named without naming. The Quran had been mentioned just before in context, so this pronoun carries maximum weight: the THING you already know about — We sent it down on THIS night. Scholars say the Quran was revealed in two stages: first, entirely, from the Lawh al-Mahfuz to Bayt al-Izzah (a station in the lowest heaven) on Laylat al-Qadr; then gradually to the Prophet ﷺ over 23 years.
🎯 Tajweed Notes
Madd AsliInnā (ā), Anzalnāhu (ā), Laylati (no madd — short vowels).
ShaddahInnā — Nun has Shaddah: “IN-nā.”
٢
وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ
Wa-mā adrāka mā laylatu l-qadr
“And what will make you know what the Night of Power is?”
The same rhetorical device as Al-Qari'ah (L15) and Al-Haqqah: “wa-mā adrāka” — what will make you know? This phrase always signals that what follows exceeds normal human comprehension. Even the Prophet ﷺ could not fully grasp what this night contains until it was described. The question builds awe before the answer — preparing the listener to receive v.3 with maximum weight.
🎯 Tajweed Notes
Madd AsliMā (ā) x2, Adrāka (ā). Each 2 counts.
٣
لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ
Laylatu l-qadri khayrun min alfi shahr
“The Night of Power is better than a thousand months.”
The most famous verse of this Surah — the answer to v.2's question. A thousand months = 83 years and 4 months. A person who lives 60 years has perhaps 40 years of adult worship. This single night — if spent in sincere worship — outweighs all of that. The Prophet ﷺ showed the Companions a man from Bani Israel who worshipped for 1,000 months continuously and they were saddened, feeling they could never reach that. Then this Surah was revealed. “Khayrun” — better, greater — not just equal. One night surpasses 83+ years.
🎯 Tajweed Notes
Madd AsliKhayrun (no madd). Shahr — short vowels. Alfi — short vowels.
TanweenKhayrun-in (Tanween Damm), Shahr-in (Tanween Damm) — add n sound when reading connected; drop at Waqf.
Tanazzalu l-malā'ikatu wa-r-rūḥu fīhā bi-idhni rabbihim min kulli amr
“The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter.”
“Tanazzalu” — present tense, implying the descent is ongoing throughout the entire night, wave after wave. “Al-malā'ikah” — THE angels (all of them, definite). “Wa-r-Rūḥ” — AND the Spirit (Jibril ﷺ). He is mentioned SEPARATELY from the angels, showing his unique rank above all of them. “Bi-idhni rabbihim” — by Allah's permission; angels act only by divine command. “Min kulli amr” — for every matter: every divine decree for the coming year is brought down on this night. The Prophet ﷺ said the earth becomes so filled with angels that there is no span of a hand that does not have an angel on it.
ShaddahTanazzalu — Zay has Shaddah: “ta-naz-ZA-lu.” Rabbihim — Ba has Shaddah.
Lam ShamsiyyahAr-Rūḥ — Lam of “al” absorbed into Ra: “ar-RŪḤ.”
٥
سَلَامٌ هِيَ حَتّى مَطْلَعِ الْفَجْرِ
Salāmun hiya ḥattā maṭla'i l-fajr
“Peace it is, until the break of dawn.”
“Salāmun” placed first — before everything else, it is PEACE. The word comes before the verb and subject, giving it maximum emphasis. The indefinite Tanween on salām — peace of an immeasurable, undefinable kind. “Hiya” — it is (referring to the whole night). “Ḥattā maṭla'i l-fajr” — until Fajr breaks. The peace is continuous, unbroken, from the first moment of the night until the very first light of dawn. Scholars say evil jinn cannot operate on this night, no harm can be decreed, and every worshipper is in a state of salām — divine peace and wholeness.
Al-Qadr is only 30 words — the shortest lesson in this block. Every word deserves full attention. Practice verse by verse, then as one flowing recitation.

“O Allah, You are the Ever-Pardoning, You love to pardon, so pardon me.”

Lessons from Surah Al-Qadr
دروس سورة القدر
🌙 5 Transforming Lessons
1
One night can change your entire spiritual accounting: No Muslim should feel that they have “not done enough” worship to have a good standing before Allah. One Laylat al-Qadr, sincerely spent, outweighs 83 years of continuous worship. This night is Allah's extraordinary mercy to this Ummah — a chance for everyone, regardless of past sins or missed worship.
2
Seek it actively — do not wait for certainty: The Prophet ﷺ said: “Seek it in the last ten nights, in the odd nights.” He did not say he would confirm it. The seeking IS the worship. A Muslim who spends all ten odd nights in worship has not “missed” the night — they have caught it multiple times over.
3
The du'a of pardon is specifically recommended for this night: When 'A'isha (RA) asked what du'a to make on Laylat al-Qadr, the Prophet ﷺ gave her one du'a: “Allāhumma innaka 'afwón tuḥibbu l-'afwa fa'fu 'annī.” The focus is on pardon — not requests for worldly things. The greatest gift this night can give is a clean slate.
4
The Quran's descent is what makes this night sacred: The night was not great first and then the Quran was chosen for it. The Quran descended on it and MADE it the greatest night. This shows that every transformation in human life begins with divine revelation — the Quran is the source of all blessing.
5
“Salāmun” — seek peace this night, not just reward: The final description of Laylat al-Qadr is not “powerful” or “overwhelming.” It is “PEACE.” A believer who spends this night in sincere du'a, Quran recitation, and remembrance enters a state of salām — wholeness, peace, and connection with Allah — that transforms how they carry themselves into the rest of the year.
Recite Al-Qadr itself abundantly: Every recitation of Surah Al-Qadr is a connection with the night it describes. The Prophet ﷺ said reciting it is like being present at the first revelation of the Quran. Recite it repeatedly on each of the last ten odd nights.
🙏
Make the du'a of pardon: “Allāhumma innaka 'afwón tuḥibbu l-'afwa fa'fu 'annī.” Repeat it throughout the night. This is the du'a the Prophet ﷺ specifically recommended. Pardon — not wealth, not health, not worldly success. Start with the soul.
🌞
The odd nights of the last ten: 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th of Ramadan. The 27th night is most strongly reported in narrations, but seek all five. The Prophet ﷺ used to wake his family and intensify his worship in the last ten days beyond any other time.
📋
Read Quran, make du'a, give sadaqah: These three fill the night with maximum benefit. Each act of worship on this night is multiplied by the night's reward. Even sleeping in a state of wudu with the intention of worship earns reward if you intended to wake for prayer.
Five verses, five beats. The Surah flows as a perfect crescendo: statement (v.1) → awe-question (v.2) → answer-reward (v.3) → angels descend (v.4) → peace until dawn (v.5). Once this rhythm is felt, the Surah memorises itself.
2
Verses 1–2: The Announcement & Question
V.1: “Innā anzalnāhu fī laylati l-qadr.” — 7 words. Shaddah on Innā. V.2: “Wa-mā adrāka mā laylatu l-qadr.” — 7 words, same ending as v.1. The rhyme “l-qadr” anchors both verses together. Repeat 15 times.
🌙 V.1 and V.2 both end in “laylati/laylatu l-qadr” — the rhyme makes them easy to hold together.
3
Verse 3: The Heart of the Surah
“Laylatu l-qadri khayrun min alfi shahr.” — 6 words. This is the most famous verse. Tanween on khayrun and shahr at Waqf. Say it 20 times. Then say it in the context of v.2→v.3 (question → answer). This verse should be effortless before moving on.
4
Verses 4–5: Angels & Peace
V.4: “Tanazzalu l-malā'ikatu wa-r-rūḥu fīhā bi-idhni rabbihim min kulli amr.” — the longest verse. Shaddah on Tanazzalu (Zay) and Rabbihim (Ba). Lam Shams on ar-Rūḥ. V.5: “Salāmun hiya ḥattā maṭla'i l-fajr.” — 6 words. Madd Aarid on al-fajr at Waqf.
⏱️ Total: 10 minutes. Al-Qadr is the shortest Surah in this part of the series — only 30 words. Every word is precious.

Frequently Asked Questions
أسئلة متكررة
Why is Laylat al-Qadr hidden and not confirmed to one night?
+
The Prophet ﷺ was shown the exact night but then forgot it after witnessing two men arguing. He said: “Seek it in the last ten nights, in the odd nights.” (Bukhari) The wisdom scholars mention: if the night were confirmed, people would worship only that one night and neglect the others. By hiding it, Allah ensures Muslims strive across multiple nights, multiplying their total worship many times over. The uncertainty IS the gift — it guarantees effort rather than complacency.
Is the Night of Qadr only in Ramadan?
+
Yes, by scholarly consensus Laylat al-Qadr is in Ramadan — based on Surah Al-Baqarah (2:185): “The month of Ramadan in which the Quran was revealed.” Combined with Al-Qadr v.1, the Quran was revealed in Ramadan AND on Laylat al-Qadr — so the night is definitively in Ramadan. The majority view narrows it further to the last ten nights, with the odd nights most strongly supported.
What does it mean that the Quran was revealed on this night but took 23 years to come?
+
Scholars describe two stages of Quranic revelation: First, the entire Quran was sent down from the Lawh al-Mahfuz (Preserved Tablet) to Bayt al-Izzah (a station in the lowest heaven) on Laylat al-Qadr. Second, it was then gradually revealed to the Prophet ﷺ over 23 years according to events and divine wisdom. Al-Qadr refers to the first stage — the night the Quran entered the earthly realm as a complete whole.
