☀️ A Divine Message of Personal Comfort — Sent to the Prophet ﷺ in Difficulty
Surah Ash-Sharḥ was revealed to the Prophet ﷺ during a period of personal difficulty — likely in the early Makkan years when the burden of prophethood, rejection, and doubt was heaviest. Allah responds not with commandments but with three gifts already given, and then the most powerful promise in the Quran: “Inna ma'a l-'usri yusrā — with every hardship comes ease” — stated TWICE for double certainty.

Welcome to Lesson 22! Surah Ash-Sharḥ is one of the most comforting Surahs in the entire Quran. It was revealed directly to the Prophet ﷺ when he was struggling, and it speaks to every human who has ever felt overwhelmed, burdened, or lost in difficulty.

In 8 short verses, Allah reminds the Prophet ﷺ of three gifts already given to him, then commands two actions, and delivers two promises. The central promise — “Inna ma'a l-'usri yusrā” — is repeated back-to-back in verses 5 and 6. Scholars say the repetition means it is not just a promise but a guarantee: the ease is already coming. It is always already with the hardship.

Surah Nameالشَّرْح — Ash-Sharḥ (The Expansion / The Opening / The Relief). Also called Surah Al-Inóshirāḥ.
Surah Number94
Verses8 verses
Words27 words
Letters102 letters
RevelationMakki — revealed in the early Makkah period during the Prophet's ﷺ greatest personal difficulty
JuzJuz 30 — Juz Amma
ContextThis Surah directly follows Aḍ-Ḍuḥā (93) in both the Quran and in the circumstances of revelation. Both were revealed together or in close succession to comfort the Prophet ﷺ. Together they are sometimes prayed as one unit with no Bismillah between them in some scholarly traditions.
The Three Gifts(1) v.1: Sharḥ ṣadr — expansion of the chest (heart/mind). (2) v.2: Waḍa'nā 'anka wizrak — We removed your burden from you. (3) v.3: Alladī anqaḍa ẓahrak — that which had weighed down your back.
Inna ma'a l-'usri yusrāThe central promise — stated TWICE (v.5 and v.6). “Ma'a” (with) = the ease is ALREADY with the hardship, not after it. The definite article on al-'usr (the hardship) and indefinite on yusrān (an ease) means one hardship cannot overcome two eases.
Two Commandsv.7: Fa-idhā faragh-ta fa-nṣab — When you are free, then strive (work hard). v.8: Wa-ilā rabbika fa-rghab — And to your Lord direct your longing/desire. Effort + reliance on Allah.

One Hardship, Two Eases — The Arabic Grammar Secret

Classical scholars of Arabic grammar noticed something remarkable in v.5–6: “al-'usr” (the hardship) is definite — it has “al” (the). “Yusrā” (ease) in both verses is indefinite — no “al.” In Arabic grammar, a definite noun repeated refers to the SAME thing, while an indefinite noun repeated refers to a NEW thing each time. So: there is ONE hardship, but TWO different eases. The hardship cannot defeat two eases. This is why scholars say Allah guaranteed double ease for every hardship.

The Key Word: “Ma'a” — WITH, Not After

The Arabic preposition “ma'a” means “with” or “together with” — it does NOT mean “after.” This is the most important word in the Surah. Allah does not say ease will come AFTER the hardship — He says ease is already WITH the hardship. It is a companion to the difficulty, not a replacement for it. This means: in the middle of the hardship, right now, in this moment — the ease is already present. The believer who knows this looks for the ease within the hardship, not only beyond it.

Verse by Verse Deep Explanation

شرح الآيات آية آية
١
أَلَمْ نَشْرَحْ لَكَ صَدْرَكَ
Alam nashrah laka ṣadrak
“Did We not expand your chest for you?”
“Alam” — Did We not? A rhetorical question expecting the answer: Yes, you did! It is a reminder disguised as a question. Allah is not asking the Prophet ﷺ if he remembers — He is drawing his attention to something he may have forgotten in his difficulty. “Nashrah” — We expanded. Sharḥ al-ṣadr (expansion of the chest) refers to the opening and lightening of the heart, mind, and spirit to receive, carry, and deliver the prophetic mission. Scholars connect this to the literal chest-opening of the Prophet ﷺ as a child (Sahih Muslim) when Jibril ﷺ purified his heart. Spiritually, it means: We gave you the capacity to carry this message without being overwhelmed.
🎯 Tajweed Notes
Madd AsliṢadrak — no madd (short vowels). Nashrah — short vowels.
٢–٣
وَوَضَعْنَا عَنكَ وِزْرَكَ · الَّذِي أَنْقَضَ ظَهْرَكَ
Wa-waḍa'nā 'anka wizrak / Alladhī anqaḍa ẓahrak
“And We removed your burden from you — that which had weighed down your back.”
“Waḍa'nā” — We set aside, We lifted off. The burden (wizr) is described as something that had “anqaḍa ẓahrak” — was about to snap your spine. The word “anqaḍa” is intense — it means to break completely, the way a heavy load breaks a back. The imagery is vivid: the Prophet ﷺ was carrying something so heavy it was about to destroy him physically and spiritually. Scholars say this refers to: the weight of ignorance before prophethood, the responsibility of conveying the message to a hostile audience, or the grief at being rejected by his own people. Whatever the burden was — Allah says: We already removed it.
🎯 Tajweed Notes
Madd AsliWaḍa'nā (ā). Anqaḍa — short vowels.
Heavy ḌadWaḍa'nā (ض) and Anqaḍa (ض) — deep resonant Ḍad from back of mouth.
٤
وَرَفَعْنَا لَكَ ذِكْرَكَ
Wa-rafa'nā laka dhikrak
“And We elevated your mention/reputation for you.”
“Rafa'nā” — We raised, We elevated. “Dhikrak” — your mention, your name, your remembrance. This gift is perhaps the most visible of all three. The scholars say: the Prophet's ﷺ name is joined to Allah's own name in the Shahādah — “Ash-hadu an lā ilāha illā llāh, wa ash-hadu anna Muḥammadan rasūlu llāh.” Every ādhān called five times a day in every city across the world. Every prayer in every mosque. Ibn 'Abbās (RA) said: “My name is mentioned alongside My name.” No human being in history has their name mentioned more times per day across more languages and lands. This was given at a time when the Prophet ﷺ felt forgotten and unheard.
🎯 Tajweed Notes
Madd AsliRafa'nā (ā), Dhikrak — short vowels.
٥–٦
فَإِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا · إِنَّ م)َعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا
Fa-inna ma'a l-'usri yusrā / Inna ma'a l-'usri yusrā
“For indeed, with hardship comes ease. Indeed, with hardship comes ease.”
The most powerful two verses in this Surah — and among the most comforting in the entire Quran. Repeated TWICE, back to back, with only “Fa” (then/so) added at the start of v.5. The repetition is not accidental: in Arabic, repeating a statement is the strongest possible form of emphasis — stronger than any other rhetorical device. Al-'usr (the hardship) is definite — “the” one hardship. Yusrān (ease) is indefinite both times — two different, new eases. One hardship, two eases. And notice: “ma'a” — WITH the hardship, not after it. The ease is a companion to the trial. The moment the hardship arrives, its ease already accompanies it.
🎯 Tajweed Notes
Madd AsliYusrā (ā) x2 — Alif 2 counts each time. Ma'a (no madd, short).
ShaddahInna — Nun has Shaddah: “IN-na.”
TanweenYusrān at Waqf — drop Tanween when stopping.
٧–٨
فَإِذَا فَرَغْتَ فَانصَبْ · وَإِلَى رَبِّكَ فَارْغَبْ
Fa-idhā faragh-ta fa-nṣab / Wa-ilā rabbika fa-rghab
“So when you are free, strive hard. And to your Lord direct your longing.”
After the three reminders and the double promise, Allah gives two commands that form the believer's formula for navigating hardship. V.7 — Fa-nṣab (strive hard): When you finish one task, immediately move to the next. Do not sit idle between hardships — fill the free moments with productive effort. The word “naṣaba” means intense labour. V.8 — Fa-rghab (direct your longing to your Lord): “Raghiba ilā” = to turn toward with desire and hope. All your hope, longing, aspiration — direct it ONLY to Allah. Not to people, not to circumstances, not to your own ability. Together these two commands say: work hard AND depend only on Allah. Effort + Tawakkul.
🎯 Tajweed Notes
Madd AsliIdhā (ā), Ilā (ā).
Madd AaridFa-rghab at Surah end — when stopping: 2, 4, or 6 counts on final B.
Heavy ṢādFa-nṣab (ص) — deep from back of mouth: “fan-ṢAB.”

The Three Divine Gifts Already Given

ثلاثة هبات إلهية
☀️ Allah Reminds: These Three Were Already Given to You
Verses 1–4 are all past tense — gifts already received before this Surah was even revealed
أَلَمْ نَشْرَحْ لَكَ صَدْرَكَ
GIFT 1: EXPANDED CHEST
We opened and lightened your heart, giving you the capacity to carry the prophetic mission without being crushed. Your ṣadr (chest/heart) was prepared for this calling. The question “Did We not?” means: remember, it was already done.
🥚
وَوَضَعْنَا عَنكَ وِزْرَكَ
GIFT 2: BURDEN LIFTED
The crushing load — whatever had been breaking your back — was already removed by Allah before this moment of difficulty. The past tense confirms: this has been done. You are not carrying alone.
🌟
وَرَفَعْنَا لَكَ ذِكْرَكَ
GIFT 3: REPUTATION ELEVATED
Your name is mentioned alongside Allah's in every adan, every prayer, every shahada. Five times a day in every city on earth for over 1,400 years — this elevation was already given at a time when you felt unheard.

With Hardship Comes Ease — Twice

إن مع العسر يسرًا

ONE HARDSHIP
Al-'usr (definite — the same one). One difficulty.
☀️
يُسْرًا + يُسْرًا
TWO EASES
Yusrān x2 (indefinite — a new ease each time). Two different eases for one hardship.
📚

Why Does “Ma'a” (With) Change Everything?

If the verse said “ba'da l-'usri yusrā” (AFTER hardship comes ease), the believer would endure the hardship and wait for ease to arrive later. But “ma'a” (WITH) means the ease is a companion to the difficulty right now. This transforms how a believer experiences hardship: instead of waiting for it to end, they look for the ease that is already present — the lesson, the growth, the hidden mercy, the door that is already opening. The ease does not arrive when the hardship leaves. It was already there.

«إن مع العسر يسرًا، لن يغلب عسر واحد يسرين»
“With the hardship comes ease — one hardship will never overcome two eases.”
— Al-Hasan al-Baṣrī (RA) — from his commentary on Surah Ash-Sharḥ

Virtues & When to Recite Ash-Sharḥ

فضائل السورة

☀️ When to Recite Ash-Sharḥ

💔
In the middle of every hardship: When anxiety, grief, difficulty, or overwhelm arrives — recite v.5–6: “Inna ma'a l-'usri yusrā.” Twice. Let the words reshape your experience: the ease is already WITH this hardship. Look for it. It is here.
🌟
To remember what Allah has already given: When you feel forgotten or unrewarded, recite v.1–4. Allah already expanded your chest, lifted your burden, elevated your name. Count the gifts already given before asking for more.
Before a new task or project: Recite v.7–8 before beginning any effort: “Fa-nṣab wa-rghab.” Commit to working hard and direct all your hope to Allah. This is the formula for productive, blessed effort.

Memorize Ash-Sharḥ in 10 Minutes

احفظ سورة الشرح
1

Structure: 3 Gifts → Double Promise → 2 Commands

Verses 1–4 = three past-tense gifts (expanded chest, burden lifted, name elevated). Verses 5–6 = the double ease promise. Verses 7–8 = two commands (strive then turn to Allah). Three movements, very short.

2

Verses 1–4: The Three Gifts (All Start with Past Tense Verbs)

V.1: “Alam nashrah laka ṣadrak.” V.2–3: “Wa-waḍa'nā 'anka wizrak / Alladhī anqaḍa ẓahrak.” V.4: “Wa-rafa'nā laka dhikrak.” Notice: nashrah, waḍa'nā, anqaḍa, rafa'nā — all verbs of action. Repeat 12 times.

☀️ The three gifts flow as one thought: opened chest → removed burden that crushed back → elevated name.
3

Verses 5–6: The Double Promise (Easiest Part)

V.5 and V.6 are almost identical — only “Fa” added at start of v.5. “Fa-inna ma'a l-'usri yusrā / Inna ma'a l-'usri yusrā.” These 10 words are the heart of the Surah. Repeat 20 times until automatic. Shaddah on Inna. Yusrā ends with Madd Asli (ā) + Tanween.

⚡ V.5 and V.6 are nearly the same sentence — the easiest pair in Juz Amma to memorize.
4

Verses 7–8: The Two Commands

V.7: “Fa-idhā faragh-ta fa-nṣab.” V.8: “Wa-ilā rabbika fa-rghab.” Only 9 words total. Heavy Ṣād in fa-nṣab. Madd Aarid on fa-rghab at Surah end. Idhā and ilā both have Madd Asli (ā). Repeat each 10 times then chain.

⏱️ Total: 10 minutes. At only 27 words, Ash-Sharḥ is one of the shortest Surahs in the entire Quran.

The Rain and Sun Story: “When it rains, the sun is not gone — it is just behind the clouds. Allah says in this Surah: with every difficulty comes ease — like the sun behind the clouds. The ease is ALREADY there, even when you can't see it yet. When something is hard at school or at home, remember: the ease is already coming WITH the difficulty!”
🌟
Count Your Gifts Activity: “Allah told the Prophet ﷺ to remember three gifts Allah had already given him. Can YOU count three gifts Allah gave YOU today? (Eyes to see, food to eat, family who loves you.) When things feel hard, count your gifts — you'll find Allah already gave you so much!”
The Double Promise Game: “Allah said the ease promise TWICE — say it with me: INNA MA'A L-'USRI YUSRĀ! (again:) INNA MA'A L-'USRI YUSRĀ! When Allah says something twice, it is extra important. When something is hard, say it two times: ease is coming, ease is coming! Try it next time something is difficult.”
💪
Strive Then Ask Allah: “Verse 7 says: when you finish one thing, work hard on the next. Verse 8 says: ask Allah for help. So the rule is: DO YOUR BEST + ASK ALLAH. Never just ask Allah without trying. Never just try without asking Allah. Both together! What is something hard you're facing? Let's say: I'll try my best AND I'll ask Allah to help me!”
