Surah Al-Ma'arij — Complete Text (Surah 70) — 44 Verses
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
١
سَأَلَ سَآئِلٌ بِعَذَابٍ وَاقِعٍ
Sa'ala sa'ilun bi-‘adhabin waqi‘
“A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen.”
٢
لِّلْكَافِرِينَ لَيْسَ لَهُ دَافِعٌ
Li-l-kafirina laysa lahu dafi‘
“To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer.”
٣
مِّنَ اللَّهِ ذِي الْمَعَارِجِ
Mina llahi dhi l-ma‘arij
“From Allah, Owner of the Ways of Ascent.”
٤
تَعْرُجُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَالرُّوحُ إِلَيْهِ فِي يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُ خَمْسِينَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ
Ta‘ruju l-mala'ikatu wa-r-ruḥu ilayhi fi yawmin kana miqdaruhu khamsina alfa sanah
“The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day whose extent is fifty thousand years.”

فَاصْبِرْ صَبْرًا جَمِيلًا
Fa-ṣbir ṣabran jamila
“So be patient with gracious patience.”
٦
إِنَّهُمْ يَرَوْنَهُ بَعِيدًا
Innahum yarawnahu ba‘ida
“Indeed, they see it as distant.”
٧
وَنَرَاهُ قَرِيبًا
Wa-narahu qariba
“But We see it as near.”
٨
يَوْمَ تَكُونُ السَّمَاءُ كَالْمُهْلِ
Yawma takunu s-sama'u ka-l-muhl
“On the Day the sky will be like murky oil.”
٩
وَتَكُونُ الْجِبَالُ كَالْعِهْنِ
Wa-takunu l-jibalu ka-l-‘ihn
“And the mountains will be like wool.”
١٠
وَلَا يَسْأَلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمًا
Wa-la yas'alu ḥamimun ḥamima
“And no close friend will ask [anything] of a friend.”

يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْۚ يَوَدُّ الْمُجْرِمُ لَوْ يَفْتَدِي مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمِئِذٍ بِبَنِيهِ
Yubaṣṣaruna hum yawaddu l-mujrimu law yaftadi min ‘adhabi yawma'idhin bi-banih
“They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish he could ransom himself from that Day's punishment with his children.”

وَصَاحِبَتِهِ وَأَخِيهِ
Wa-ṣaḥibatihi wa-akhih
“And his wife and his brother.”
١٣
وَفَصِيلَتِهِ الَّتِي تُؤْوِيهِ
Wa-faṣilatihi llati tu'wih
“And his nearest kindred who shelter him.”
١٤
وَمَن فِي الْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ
Wa-man fi l-arḍi jami‘an thumma yunjih
“And whoever is on earth entirely, if that would save him.”
١٥
كَلَّاۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ
Kalla innaha Laẓa
“No! Indeed, it is Laza [the Flame].”
١٦
نَزَّاعَةً لِّلشَّوَىٰ
Nazza‘atan li-sh-shawa
“A remover of the extremities.”
١٧
تَدْعُو مَنْ أَدْبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ
Tad‘u man adbara wa-tawalla
“It calls whoever turned his back and turned away.”
١٨
وَجَمَعَ فَأَوْعَىٰ
Wa-jama‘a fa-aw‘a
“And gathered [wealth] and hoarded.”
١٩
إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا
Inna l-insana khuliqa halu‘a
“Indeed, mankind was created anxious.”
٢٠
إِذَا مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ جَزُوعًا
Idha massahu sh-sharru jazu‘a
“When touched by bad, [he is] impatient.”
٢١
وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ الْخَيْرُ مَنُوعًا
Wa-idha massahu l-khayru manu‘a
“And when touched by good, [he is] withholding.”
٢٢
إِلَّا الْمُصَلِّينَ
Illa l-muṣallin
“Except the observers of prayer.”
٢٣
الَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ دَائِمُونَ
Alladhina hum ‘ala ṣalatihim da'imun
“Those who are constant in their prayer.”
٢٤
وَالَّذِينَ فِي أَمْوَالِهِمْ حَقٌّ مَّعْلُومٌ
Wa-lladhina fi amwalihim ḥaqqun ma‘lum
“And those within whose wealth is a known right.”
٢٥
لِّلسَّائِلِ وَالْمَحْرُومِ
Li-s-sa'ili wa-l-maḥrum
“For the petitioner and the deprived.”
٢٦
وَالَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوْمِ الدِّينِ
Wa-lladhina yuṣaddiquna bi-yawmi d-din
“And those who believe in the Day of Recompense.”
٢٧
وَالَّذِينَ هُم مِّنْ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشْفِقُونَ
Wa-lladhina hum min ‘adhabi rabbihim mushfiqun
“And those who are fearful of their Lord's punishment.”
٢٨
إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمْ غَيْرُ مَأْمُونٍ
Inna ‘adhaba rabbihim ghayru ma'mun
“Indeed, their Lord's punishment is not [something] to feel secure from.”
٢٩
وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَافِظُونَ
Wa-lladhina hum li-furujihim ḥafiẓun
“And those who guard their private parts.”
٣٠
إِلَّا عَلَىٰ أَزْوَاجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ
Illa ‘ala azwajihim aw ma malakat aymanuhum fa-innahum ghayru malumin
“Except from their spouses; indeed, they are not to be blamed.”
٣١
فَمَنِ ابْتَغَىٰ وَرَاءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْعَادُونَ
Fa-mani btagha wara'a dhalika fa-ula'ika humu l-‘adun
“But whoever seeks beyond that, those are the transgressors.”
٣٢
وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِأَمَانَاتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَاعُونَ
Wa-lladhina hum li-amanatihim wa-‘ahdihim ra‘un
“And those who are attentive to their trusts and their promises.”
٣٣
وَالَّذِينَ هُم بِشَهَادَاتِهِمْ قَائِمُونَ
Wa-lladhina hum bi-shahadatihim qa'imun
“And those who are upright in their testimonies.”
٣٤
وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَ
Wa-lladhina hum ‘ala ṣalatihim yuḥafiẓun
“And those who guard their prayer.”
٣٥
أُولَٰئِكَ فِي جَنَّاتٍ مُّكْرَمُونَ
Ula'ika fi jannatin mukramun
“Those will be in gardens, honored.”
٣٦
فَمَالِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا قِبَلَكَ مُهْطِعِينَ
Fa-mali lladhina kafaru qibalaka muhṭi‘in
“So what is [the matter] with the disbelievers, rushing toward you?”
٣٧
عَنِ الْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ الشِّمَالِ عِزِينَ
‘Ani l-yamini wa-‘ani sh-shimali ‘izin
“From the right and the left, in groups?”
٣٨
أَيَطْمَعُ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُدْخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيمٍ
A-yaṭma‘u kullu mri'in minhum an yudkhala jannata na‘im
“Does every person among them aspire to enter a garden of pleasure?”
٣٩
كَلَّاۖ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاهُم مِّمَّا يَعْلَمُونَ
Kalla inna khalaqnahum mimma ya‘lamun
“No! Indeed, We created them from that which they know.”
٤٠
فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِرَبِّ الْمَشَارِقِ وَالْمَغَارِبِ إِنَّا لَقَادِرُونَ
Fa-la uqsimu bi-rabbi l-mashariqi wa-l-magharibi inna la-qadirun
“So I swear by the Lord of the risings and settings that indeed We are able.”
٤١
عَلَىٰ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَيْرًا مِّنْهُمْ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ
‘Ala an nubaddila khayran minhum wa-ma naḥnu bi-masbuqin
“To replace them with better than them; and We are not to be outdone.”
٤٢
فَذَرْهُمْ يَخُوضُوا وَيَلْعَبُوا حَتَّىٰ يُلَاقُوا يَوْمَهُمُ الَّذِي يُوعَدُونَ
Fa-dharhum yakhuḍu wa-yal‘abu ḥatta yulaqu yawmahumu lladhi yu‘adun
“So leave them to converse vainly and play until they meet their promised Day.”
٤٣
يَوْمَ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ الْأَجْدَاثِ سِرَاعًا كَأَنَّهُمْ إِلَىٰ نُصُبٍ يُوفِضُونَ
Yawma yakhrujuna mina l-ajdathi sira‘an ka-annahum ila nuṣubin yufiḍun
“The Day they emerge from graves rapidly, as if rushing toward an idol.”
٤٤
خَاشِعَةً أَبْصَارُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌۚ ذَٰلِكَ الْيَوْمُ الَّذِي كَانُوا يُوعَدُونَ
Khashi‘atan abṣaruhum tarhaquhum dhillah dhalika l-yawmu lladhi kanu yu‘adun
“Their eyes humbled, humiliation covering them. That is the Day they were promised.”
