Surah Al-Alaq
Welcome to Lesson 20! Surah Al-Alaq holds the most historically significant verses in the entire Quran: the first five verses ever revealed. On the Night of Power (Laylat al-Qadr) in the Cave of Hira, the Prophet ﷺ received these words — and the world changed forever.
The Surah has two distinct parts: verses 1–5 (the first revelation — Read! In the name of your Lord who created) and verses 6–19 (a later revelation condemning Abu Jahl's arrogance and command to the Prophet ﷺ to not obey and draw near to Allah). Together they form the complete Surah.
Surah Overview & Key Facts
نظرة عامة على سورة العلق| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Surah Name | الْعَلَق — Al-Alaq (The Clinging Clot / The Blood Clot). Named after v.2: human beings created from a clinging clot of blood. |
| Surah Number | 96 |
| Verses | 19 verses |
| Words | 72 words |
| Letters | 286 letters |
| Revelation | Makki. The first 5 verses are the FIRST revelation ever. The remaining verses (6–19) were revealed later, also in Makkah. |
| Juz | Juz 30 — Juz Amma |
| First Revelation | The Prophet ﷺ was 40 years old, in the Cave of Hira, when Jibril ﷺ appeared and commanded “Iqra!” three times. A'isha (RA) narrated the full account in Sahih Al-Bukhari — the most important hadith in all of Islam. |
| “Iqra” — Read! | The command “Iqra” (Read/Recite) was given to a man who was unlettered (ummi). He replied “Mā ana bi-qāri’” — I am not a reader. Yet Allah commanded him to read. The message: reading and knowledge are a divine command, not merely an option. |
| Al-Alaq | v.2: “Khalaqa l-insāna min 'alaq” — created the human from 'alaq (a clinging clot of blood/embryo). This is one of the earliest Quranic references to embryology. |
| Abu Jahl | v.9–16: Someone (understood by scholars to be Abū Jahl) tried to physically prevent the Prophet ﷺ from praying. Allah condemned him and promised the painful punishment of Hell. |
| The Pen | v.4: “Allama bi-l-qalam” — Who taught by the pen. The pen is the instrument of all human knowledge and civilisation. The first revelation connects reading, creation, and the pen in 5 verses. |
Why Was the First Command “Read” to an Unlettered Man?
The Prophet ﷺ was ummi — he could not read or write in the conventional sense. Yet the first divine command was “Iqra”. The message is profound: reading here does not mean literacy alone — it means comprehending, reflecting, and receiving divine knowledge. By commanding an unlettered man to read, Allah demonstrated that knowledge from Him transcends ordinary human limitations. The Quran itself became the miraculous “reading” that the Prophet ﷺ was given.

“Wa-sjud wa-qtarib” — The Most Powerful Command in the Surah
The final verse ends with two commands: Prostrate and Draw near. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The closest a servant comes to his Lord is in sujud (prostration).” (Sahih Muslim). This is why this verse is a verse of sajdah tilawāh — when it is recited, the listener and reciter both prostrate to Allah. The Surah that begins with the command to READ ends with the command to PROSTRATE — knowledge leads to submission.

احفظ سورة العلقTwo Clear Parts: First Revelation (v.1–5) + Response to Arrogance (v.6–19)
Verses 1–5 are the most famous and most important. Memorise them first and perfectly. Then verses 6–19 follow a narrative logic: human transgresses → Abu Jahl forbids prayer → Allah responds → final command to prostrate.
Verses 1–5: The First Five (Most Sacred in Quran)
Two “Iqra” commands frame the section (v.1 and v.3). Between them: creation from a clot (v.2). After second Iqra: pen (v.4) and taught what we didn't know (v.5). The structure: Iqra → creation → Iqra → pen → knowledge. Repeat 20 times until effortless.
Verses 6–10: The Pivot to Arrogance
V.6: Kallā — inna l-insāna la-yaṭghā. V.7: An ra'āhu stagh nā. V.8: Inna ilā rabbika r-ruj'ā. V.9: Ara'ayta lladhī yanhā. V.10: 'Abdan idhā ṣallā. The rhyme pattern (ā ending) runs through v.6–10. Repeat 10 times each.
Verses 15–19: The Final Warning + Prostration
V.15: Kallā la-in lam yantahi la-nasfa'an bi-n-nāṣiyah. V.16: Nāṣiyatin kādhibatin khāṭi'ah. V.17: Falyadqu nādiyah. V.18: Sanad'u z-zabāniyah. V.19: Kallā lā tuṭi'hu wa-sjud wa-qtarib. The final verse — remember Sajdah Tilawāh.
