📖 The Night Everything Changed — The First Words From Allah to Humanity
Surah Al-Alaq contains the first five verses ever revealed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. In the Cave of Hira, during a night of seclusion, the Angel Jibril ﷺ appeared and commanded: “Iqra!” — Read! These first five verses changed the course of human history. The Surah then continues with a second revelation condemning human arrogance and the one who tried to stop the Prophet ﷺ from praying.

Welcome to Lesson 20! Surah Al-Alaq holds the most historically significant verses in the entire Quran: the first five verses ever revealed. On the Night of Power (Laylat al-Qadr) in the Cave of Hira, the Prophet ﷺ received these words — and the world changed forever.

The Surah has two distinct parts: verses 1–5 (the first revelation — Read! In the name of your Lord who created) and verses 6–19 (a later revelation condemning Abu Jahl's arrogance and command to the Prophet ﷺ to not obey and draw near to Allah). Together they form the complete Surah.

JuzJuz 30 — Juz Amma
First RevelationThe Prophet ﷺ was 40 years old, in the Cave of Hira, when Jibril ﷺ appeared and commanded “Iqra!” three times. A'isha (RA) narrated the full account in Sahih Al-Bukhari — the most important hadith in all of Islam.
“Iqra” — Read! The command “Iqra” (Read/Recite) was given to a man who was unlettered (ummi). He replied “Mā ana bi-qāri’” — I am not a reader. Yet Allah commanded him to read. The message: reading and knowledge are a divine command, not merely an option.
Al-Alaqv.2: “Khalaqa l-insāna min 'alaq” — created the human from 'alaq (a clinging clot of blood/embryo). This is one of the earliest Quranic references to embryology.
Abu Jahlv.9–16: Someone (understood by scholars to be Abū Jahl) tried to physically prevent the Prophet ﷺ from praying. Allah condemned him and promised the painful punishment of Hell.
The Penv.4: “Allama bi-l-qalam” — Who taught by the pen. The pen is the instrument of all human knowledge and civilisation. The first revelation connects reading, creation, and the pen in 5 verses.
📖

Why Was the First Command “Read” to an Unlettered Man?

The Prophet ﷺ was ummi — he could not read or write in the conventional sense. Yet the first divine command was “Iqra”. The message is profound: reading here does not mean literacy alone — it means comprehending, reflecting, and receiving divine knowledge. By commanding an unlettered man to read, Allah demonstrated that knowledge from Him transcends ordinary human limitations. The Quran itself became the miraculous “reading” that the Prophet ﷺ was given.

“Wa-sjud wa-qtarib” — The Most Powerful Command in the Surah

The final verse ends with two commands: Prostrate and Draw near. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The closest a servant comes to his Lord is in sujud (prostration).” (Sahih Muslim). This is why this verse is a verse of sajdah tilawāh — when it is recited, the listener and reciter both prostrate to Allah. The Surah that begins with the command to READ ends with the command to PROSTRATE — knowledge leads to submission.

“Read in the name of your Lord who created — Created the human from a clinging clot — Read, and your Lord is the Most Generous — Who taught by the pen — Taught the human what he did not know.”
The most momentous five verses in human history. The Prophet ﷺ was alone in the Cave of Hira when Jibril ﷺ appeared and embraced him three times, each time commanding: “Iqra!” — Read! Each time the Prophet ﷺ said: “Mā ana bi-qāri’” — I am not a reader. The third time, Jibril taught him these five verses. V.1: Read in the NAME of your Lord — knowledge begins with Allah, not with the self. V.2: The human was created from a clot — humility before God. V.3: Read! Your Lord is al-Akram — the Most Generous, the source of all knowledge. V.4: He taught by the pen — recording and writing are divine tools. V.5: He taught humans what they did not know — all knowledge is ultimately from Allah.

Kallā inna l-insāna la-yaṭghā / An ra'āhu stagh nā / Inna ilā rabbika r-ruj'ā
“No! Indeed the human transgresses — Because he sees himself as self-sufficient. Indeed to your Lord is the return.”
After the five verses of knowledge and creation comes a sharp pivot. “Kallā” — No! The same rejection word as At-Takathur. The human who was just described as created from a clot and taught by Allah’s generosity — now transgresses. The root of transgression: “ra'āhu stagh nā” — he sees himself as self-sufficient. When a person forgets their origin (a clot!) and their dependency on Allah, they transgress. The antidote: “Inna ilā rabbika r-ruj'ā” — to your Lord is the return. You WILL return, regardless of how self-sufficient you think you are.

Ara'ayta lladhī yanhā / 'Abdan idhā ṣallā / ...Alam ya'lam bi-anna llāha yarā
“Have you seen the one who forbids a servant when he prays? ... Does he not know that Allah sees?”
This section refers to Abū Jahl who physically threatened and tried to prevent the Prophet ﷺ from performing ṣalāh near the Ka'bah. A series of rhetorical questions builds the case: Do you see this person who forbids a servant from praying? (v.9–10). What if that servant is on guidance and commands righteousness? (v.11–12). What if the forbidder denies and turns away? (v.13). Then the decisive question: “Alam ya'lam bi-anna llāha yarā” — Does he not know that Allah SEES? Every attempt to stop a believer from worship is seen by Allah.

Kallā lā tuṭi'hu wa-sjud wa-qtarib
“No! Do not obey him. Prostrate and draw near [to Allah].”
The Surah ends with the most powerful sequence: a threat to Abū Jahl (v.15–18: drag by the forelock, call the angels of punishment against his associates), then the final divine command to the Prophet ﷺ: “Kallā lā tuṭi'hu” — No! Do not obey him. And then: “Wa-sjud wa-qtarib” — Prostrate and draw near. This is a verse of Sajdah Tilawāh. The response to every threat and oppression is NOT to back down — but to increase in worship and draw closer to Allah. The Surah began with “Read!” and ends with “Prostrate and draw near!” — knowledge culminates in submission.

Lessons from Surah Al-Alaq

دروس سورة العلق

📖 5 Timeless Lessons

1
Read — in the name of your Lord: The first command to humanity was not “pray” or “fast” — it was “Read.” Knowledge is the foundation of all worship. But the qualifier is critical: “bi-smi rabbika” — in the name of your Lord. Knowledge without connecting it to Allah leads to arrogance (v.6). Knowledge in the name of Allah leads to humility and submission.
2
Self-sufficiency is the root of all transgression: V.6–7: The human transgresses when he sees himself as self-sufficient. This is the diagnosis of Abū Jahl — and of every arrogant person in history. The cure: remember you were created from a clot (v.2). You were taught what you did not know (v.5). Everything you have was given by Allah.
3
Allah sees every oppressor: V.14: “Alam ya'lam bi-anna llāha yarā” — Does he not know that Allah sees? Every person who has tried to stop a Muslim from worshipping, praying, or practising Islam — Allah sees them. This verse is a source of comfort for every persecuted believer throughout history.
4
Sujud is the closest point to Allah: The Surah ends with “Wa-sjud wa-qtarib” — prostrate and draw near. The Prophet ﷺ confirmed: the closest a servant comes to Allah is in sujud. When facing oppression, difficulty, or fear — the answer is not retreat. The answer is to increase in prostration and draw closer to Allah.
5
The pen is a divine instrument: V.4: “Allama bi-l-qalam.” Writing and recording are how all human civilisation and knowledge was preserved. The Quran itself was written by the Companions. Islamic scholarship was transmitted through writing. Allah honoured the pen in the very first revelation — a sign of the importance of literacy, learning, and preservation of knowledge.

Virtues & When to Reflect on Al-Alaq

فضائل السورة

📖 When to Recite Al-Alaq

📚
Before studying or seeking knowledge: Recite the first 5 verses before any session of learning. “Iqra' bi-smi rabbika” — let every act of learning be in Allah's name. Connect all knowledge to its true source. This transforms studying from a worldly activity to an act of worship.
🙏
After every Sajdah Tilawāh: V.19 “wa-sjud wa-qtarib” requires prostration when recited. Use this moment to ask Allah to bring you closer to Him, to open your heart, and to protect you from the arrogance described in v.6–7.
💪
When facing oppression or those who try to stop your worship: V.14: “Does he not know that Allah SEES?” And v.19: “Do not obey him. Prostrate and draw near.” The response to every oppressor is MORE worship, not less. Let this Surah be your source of courage.

Memorize Al-Alaq in 30 Minutes

احفظ سورة العلق
1

Two Clear Parts: First Revelation (v.1–5) + Response to Arrogance (v.6–19)

Verses 1–5 are the most famous and most important. Memorise them first and perfectly. Then verses 6–19 follow a narrative logic: human transgresses → Abu Jahl forbids prayer → Allah responds → final command to prostrate.

2

Verses 1–5: The First Five (Most Sacred in Quran)

Two “Iqra” commands frame the section (v.1 and v.3). Between them: creation from a clot (v.2). After second Iqra: pen (v.4) and taught what we didn't know (v.5). The structure: Iqra → creation → Iqra → pen → knowledge. Repeat 20 times until effortless.

📖 “IQ-ra' bi-smi RAB-bi-kal-ladhī KHA-la-qa / KHA-la-qal-in-SĀ-na min 'A-LAQ”
3

Verses 6–10: The Pivot to Arrogance

V.6: Kallā — inna l-insāna la-yaṭghā. V.7: An ra'āhu stagh nā. V.8: Inna ilā rabbika r-ruj'ā. V.9: Ara'ayta lladhī yanhā. V.10: 'Abdan idhā ṣallā. The rhyme pattern (ā ending) runs through v.6–10. Repeat 10 times each.

4

Verses 15–19: The Final Warning + Prostration

V.15: Kallā la-in lam yantahi la-nasfa'an bi-n-nāṣiyah. V.16: Nāṣiyatin kādhibatin khāṭi'ah. V.17: Falyadqu nādiyah. V.18: Sanad'u z-zabāniyah. V.19: Kallā lā tuṭi'hu wa-sjud wa-qtarib. The final verse — remember Sajdah Tilawāh.

⏱️ Total: 30 minutes. Al-Alaq is 19 verses — first 5 are the most important in all of Islam.

The angel hugged him tightly and said: READ! The Prophet said: I can't read! Again the angel hugged him and said: READ! This happened three times. Then the angel taught him the very first words of the Quran — the words in Surah Al-Alaq. These were the very first words Allah ever sent to the whole world!”

The Pen Activity: “Allah says in this Surah: He taught us by the PEN. Ask children: what do you write with? What have you learned by writing? Your schoolwork, your Quran lessons, your notes — Allah says the pen is how He taught humans. Next time you pick up a pen, remember: Allah honoured the pen in the very first Surah ever revealed!”

The Clot Lesson: “Verse 2 says Allah created the human from a 'alaq — a tiny clinging drop of blood. Before you were born, you were this tiny! And now look at you. Allah made you from something so small into who you are. So if He could do that, can He help you with anything you're struggling with? Of course He can!”
🙏
The Prostration Verse: “The last verse of this Surah says: Prostrate and draw near to Allah! This is special — whenever you hear or read this verse, you make a sujud (put your forehead on the ground) right then. It's called Sajdah Tilawāh. Let's practice: when I recite ‘wa-sjud wa-qtarib’ — everyone makes sujud! This is worship while reading Quran.”
