In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
🕊️ The Surah That Announced the End of the Prophet's ﷺ Mission
Revealed during the Farewell Pilgrimage (10 AH), Surah An-Nasr was immediately understood by Ibn Abbas (ra) — and confirmed by the Prophet ﷺ himself — as a sign that his time in this world was nearly complete. The Prophet ﷺ began saying "SubhanAllahi wa bi-Hamdihi, Astaghfirullaha wa Atubu Ilayhi" constantly after this revelation. He passed away approximately 81 days later. It is one of the most emotionally profound Surahs in the entire Quran.
Welcome to Lesson 6! After the fire and warning of Al-Masad, we arrive at one of the most emotionally powerful Surahs — Surah An-Nasr. It is a Surah of triumph, gratitude, and farewell.
In just 3 verses and 19 words, Allah announces the completion of the Prophet's ﷺ mission, celebrates the greatest victory in Islamic history, delivers three final divine instructions, and — as understood by the great companion Ibn Abbas — gently signals that the Prophet's ﷺ time in this world was drawing to a close. This Surah made the Prophet ﷺ increase his dhikr and weep with longing to meet Allah.

Divine victory, mass entry into Islam, and 3 final instructions: glorify Allah, seek forgiveness, turn to Him
Farewell Significance
Ibn Abbas (ra) wept when he heard it — he understood it meant the Prophet ﷺ was near death. The Prophet ﷺ confirmed this and passed away ~81 days later.
The Conquest
"Al-Fatḥ" refers to Fatḥ Makkah — the conquest of Makkah in 8 AH (630 CE) — when 10,000 companions entered, 360 idols were destroyed, and Arabia opened to Islam
🕊️
The Only Madani Surah in Juz Amma — Why?
Every other Surah in Juz 30 was revealed in Makkah before the Hijrah — dealing with foundational themes of Tawheed, the Hereafter, and character. An-Nasr was revealed in Madinah, near the end of the Prophet's ﷺ life, after the mission was complete. Its placement in Juz Amma is a reminder that the Quran's arrangement is divinely ordered — not chronological. An-Nasr belongs thematically with the short, powerful Surahs of Juz 30 despite being the last to arrive.

The Key Word: Afwājā — In Multitudes
"Afwāj" is the plural of "Fawj" — a surging crowd, a wave of people, a mass movement. The Surah does not say people entered Islam one by one or in small groups — but in overwhelming waves, like a flood. After the conquest of Makkah in 8 AH, entire tribes of thousands accepted Islam in single delegations. The year 9 AH was called "The Year of the Delegations" — this exact image, now fulfilled, was Allah showing the Prophet ﷺ the fruit of his 23 years of patient struggle.

Verse by Verse Deep Explanation
شرح الآيات آية آية
١
إِذَا جَاءَ نَصْرُ اللَّهِ وَالْفَتْحُ
Idhā jāʾa naṣru Allāhi wa-l-fatḥ
"When there comes the victory of Allah and the conquest."
"Idhā" — "When" — not "if." This is certainty, not possibility. The victory IS coming — treat it as already done. "Naṣru Allāh" — the Victory of ALLAH — not the victory of the Muslims or the army. This is the Quranic way: all real victory belongs to Allah alone. The Muslims were the instrument but Allah was the source. "Al-Fatḥ" — The Conquest — refers specifically to Fatḥ Makkah in 8 AH (630 CE): 10,000 companions entered Makkah without significant bloodshed, 360 idols surrounding the Ka'bah were demolished, and 1,000 years of idol worship in the holiest city on earth ended in a single day. Verse 1 is Allah narrating this historical triumph to His Prophet ﷺ — reminding him that it was Allah who made it happen.
🎯 Tajweed Notes
Madd MuttasilJāʾa (جَاءَ) — Madd letter (Alif) + Hamzah IN THE SAME WORD = Madd Muttasil. Must be stretched 4–5 counts. "JAA-a" — hold the Alif much longer than a normal Madd.
Heavy RaNaṣru — Ra (ر) carries Damma, making it heavy (Tafkheem). "NAS-ru" with full back resonance.
Heavy Allah LamAllāhi — follows a Damma, so the Lam is HEAVY. "AL-LLAA-hi" with full weight. Same rule as in Al-Ikhlas.
QalqalahWa-l-fatḥ — Ta (ط) is a Qalqalah letter. When stopping at end of verse: "al-fatH" with echoing bounce on the Ta.
"And you see the people entering the religion of Allah in multitudes."
"Wa-raʾayta" — "And YOU see" — Allah addresses the Prophet ﷺ directly. He is being invited to witness with his own eyes the fruit of 23 years of struggle — persecution in Makkah, exile to Madinah, battles and hardships — all culminating in this spectacular moment. "Yadkhulūna fī dīni Allāh" — entering INTO the religion of Allah. The preposition "fī" (into) suggests deep, total immersion — not reluctant acceptance but whole-hearted entry. After the conquest of Makkah, the tribe of Thaqif came with 6,000. Hawazin came with thousands. The Yemeni tribes sent delegations. Entire Arabia was entering Islam wave by wave. Allah showed His Prophet ﷺ the completion of his mission — as a gift of gratitude before calling him home.
🎯 Tajweed Notes
Idghaam + GhunnahAn-Nāsa — Noon of "An" merges into Noon of "Nāsa" = doubled Noon with Ghunnah of 2 counts.
"Then glorify your Lord with praise and seek His forgiveness — Indeed He is ever Accepting of Repentance."
The greatest victory in Islamic history arrives — and Allah's instruction is not "celebrate with a feast" or "take pride." It is three sublime acts: (1) "Fa-sabbiḥ" — GLORIFY. Say SubhanAllah. Acknowledge that all power and victory belongs to Allah alone, not to armies or strategy. The Prophet ﷺ immediately began saying "SubhanAllahi wa bi-Hamdihi" in every prayer, even prostration. (2) "Bi-ḥamdi rabbik" — WITH PRAISE. Combine Tasbih with Hamd — "SubhanAllahi wa bi-Hamdihi" — the greatest dhikr combination. (3) "Wa-staghfirhu" — SEEK FORGIVENESS. The Prophet ﷺ at the peak of triumph is commanded to seek Istighfar. This teaches that Istighfar is not only for sinners — it is the highest spiritual act even for the greatest people in their greatest moments. "Tawwābā" — intensively Relenting, forever returning to His servants in mercy. The last word of the Surah — mercy. Even in the announcement of the Prophet's farewell, Allah ends with mercy.
🎯 Tajweed Notes
Shaddah + GhunnahFa-sabbiḥ — Ba has Shaddah (بِّ). Double it: "sab-BIH". Also Innahu — Noon has Shaddah (نَّ): Ghunnah 2 counts.
Throat LetterWa-staghfirhu — Ghayn (غ) is a throat letter with Sukoon. "Was-ta-GH-fir-hu" — the Gh must come from the throat clearly.
Madd AaridTawwābā at verse end — stretch the final Alif (ā) 2, 4, or 6 counts when stopping. Also: Waw in Tawwāb has Shaddah — double it: "taw-WAA-ban".
Heavy RaRabbika — Ra (ر) has Fatha, making it heavy (Tafkheem). "RAB-bi-ka" with resonance on Ra.

3 Verses · 3 Divine Instructions
ثلاث آيات — ثلاثة أوامر إلهية
💡
The Structure of An-Nasr Is Perfect
Verse 1 = Context (When victory comes). Verse 2 = Sign (People entering in multitudes). Verse 3 = Response (Here is what you must do). The first two verses describe the event. The third verse gives the correct reaction. This structure teaches: when blessings come, the believer's response is not pride or celebration — it is glorification, gratitude, and humility before Allah.
🌟
INSTRUCTION 1 — VERSE 3a
فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ
GLORIFY WITH PRAISE
Say "SubhanAllahi wa bi-Hamdihi" — glorify Allah and praise Him. The greatest dhikr combination. Acknowledge that victory comes only from Allah. After this verse, the Prophet ﷺ said this in every rakat of every prayer.
🤲
INSTRUCTION 2 — VERSE 3b
وَاسْتَغْفِرْهُ
SEEK FORGIVENESS
Even at the peak of success — seek Istighfar. This shows that Istighfar is not only for sinners. It is the highest spiritual act of humility. The Prophet ﷺ began saying "Astaghfirullaha wa atubu ilayhi" 100 times a day after this revelation.
💛
INSTRUCTION 3 — VERSE 3c
إِنَّهُ كَانَ تَوَّابًا
KNOW HIS ENDLESS MERCY
Allah seals the Surah — and the Prophet's ﷺ earthly mission — with the word "Tawwābā" (Ever-Accepting of Repentance). No matter what, His mercy is infinite. The final word given to the Prophet ﷺ before his farewell is mercy. MashaAllah.

Historical Timeline — The Road to Victory
الجدول الزمني التاريخي — طريق النصر
📅 From Persecution to Victory — 23 Years
Understanding the history makes this Surah's emotional power impossible to miss
🔥
1 BH – 13 AH / 610–622 CE — MAKKAH
The Years of Persecution
The Prophet ﷺ preached in Makkah for 13 years. He and his companions faced torture, economic boycott, social exile, and death. Abu Lahab (Lesson 5) was among the leaders of opposition. Only a handful accepted Islam. This is the darkness before the dawn.
🕌
1 AH / 622 CE — HIJRAH TO MADINAH
The Migration — A New Beginning
The Prophet ﷺ migrated to Madinah with his companions. The Islamic state began to form. The Ansar (helpers) welcomed the Muhajirin (emigrants). Islam began to grow in strength and numbers — but battles and hardships continued for years.
⚔️
2–8 AH / 624–630 CE — THE BATTLES
Badr · Uhud · Khandaq · Hudaybiyah
Years of battles, setbacks, and steadfastness. Badr: miraculous victory with 313 against 1,000. Uhud: temporary setback, major lessons. Khandaq: siege of Madinah, then miraculous relief. Hudaybiyah: treaty that seemed like defeat but opened the door to victory.
🏆
8 AH / 630 CE — FATH MAKKAH
The Conquest of Makkah — The Great Victory
10,000 companions entered Makkah. Almost no bloodshed. The Ka'bah was purified — 360 idols demolished. The Prophet ﷺ declared general amnesty for all who had persecuted him for 21 years. The city that drove him out now opened its gates to him. This is the Fatḥ of Surah An-Nasr verse 1.
🕊️
10 AH / 632 CE — FAREWELL PILGRIMAGE
Surah An-Nasr Revealed — Mission Complete
With 124,000 companions performing Hajj, this Surah was revealed. The mission was complete. Arabia had entered Islam. Ibn Abbas (ra) understood immediately — and the Prophet ﷺ confirmed — that Allah was announcing his departure. 81 days later, the Prophet ﷺ passed to the mercy of Allah on 12 Rabi al-Awwal 11 AH.
In Witr Prayer: The Prophet ﷺ recited An-Nasr frequently in Witr — especially as one of the three Surahs in the three Rakat Witr (Al-A'la, Al-Kafirun, An-Nasr). This is a recorded Sunnah.
💪
When Feeling Overwhelmed: When a task feels impossible or a situation feels hopeless — recite An-Nasr and remember: Allah's victory comes suddenly, completely, and changes everything. "When the victory of Allah comes..." — it WILL come.
🏆
After Any Success: Anytime you achieve something — a goal, a milestone, a project completed — recite An-Nasr. Then say "SubhanAllahi wa bi-Hamdihi, Astaghfirullaha wa atubu ilayhi" — attributing the success to Allah alone.
🤲
As Daily Dhikr: After reciting, follow the Prophet's ﷺ Sunnah: say "SubhanAllahi wa bi-Hamdihi, Astaghfirullaha wa atubu ilayhi" — ideally 100 times a day as the Prophet ﷺ did in his final years.
📖
To Teach Children the Lesson of Gratitude: An-Nasr is the perfect Surah to teach children that success must be met with gratitude to Allah — not pride. "Even the Prophet ﷺ — after his greatest victory — was told to say Alhamdulillah and seek forgiveness!"
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ began frequently saying in his bowing and prostration: 'SubhanakaLlahumma Rabbana wa bi-Hamdika — Allahumma aghfir li' (Glory be to You O Allah our Lord, and with Your praise — O Allah forgive me)' — implementing the Quran."
— Sahih Al-Bukhari 817 — He did this after Surah An-Nasr was revealed

Memorize An-Nasr in 15 Minutes
احفظ سورة النصر في ١٥ دقيقة
1
Listen 10 Times — Eyes Closed
Play any reciter and listen 10 times with your eyes closed before saying anything. An-Nasr has a beautiful, flowing rhythm — three verses that feel like one complete breath. Your brain absorbs it faster than you think.
⏱️ Takes about 4 minutes. Do this FIRST before reading the transliteration.
2
Master Verse 1 — Focus on Jāʾa
"Idhā jāʾa naṣru Allāhi wa-l-fatḥ" — only 6 words! The challenge is "jāʾa" (4–5 count Madd Muttasil). Practice "JAA-AA-a" alone 15 times. Then the full verse 15 times. This Madd is what makes An-Nasr beautiful to hear.
💡 "iDHAA-JAAAA-a-NAS-ru-ALLAA-hi-wal-FATH" — feel the rhythm flow like water.
3
Verse 2 — The Longest, Most Beautiful Verse
"Wa-raʾayta n-nāsa yadkhulūna fī dīni Allāhi afwājā" — break into two halves: "wa-raʾayta n-nāsa yadkhulūna" then "fī dīni Allāhi afwājā". Repeat each half 10 times, then combine. The ending "afwājā" with its Madd Aarid feels like a wave crashing — beautiful.
4
Verse 3 — The Most Important Verse
"Fa-sabbiḥ bi-ḥamdi rabbika wa-staghfirhu — innahu kāna tawwābā." The hardest part is "wa-staghfirhu" — practice each syllable: "was-tagh-fir-hu." Repeat verse 3 alone 20 times until it flows without thinking.
🌟 Verse 3 contains three of the greatest words in Islam: SubhanAllah (Tasbih), Bi-Hamd (Tahmid), Istighfar — and the name Tawwab (Most Relenting).
5
Connect All Three & Use It in Witr Tonight
Recite the complete Surah 10 times straight without stopping. Then tonight in Witr prayer — use An-Nasr as one of your Surahs. When you recite it in prayer, the memorization becomes permanent. The Prophet ﷺ used it in Witr — follow that Sunnah.

🕊️ For Children — Making An-Nasr Meaningful & Memorable!
Parents and teachers — these ideas work for children ages 5–12
🏆
The "Big Win" Story: Tell children: "Imagine you worked very hard for something for 23 years — people laughed at you, were mean to you, and tried to stop you. Then one day you won! What would you do? Most people would celebrate and be proud. But Allah told the Prophet ﷺ: 'When you win, say Alhamdulillah and ask for forgiveness!' This teaches us that our real praise goes to Allah — not ourselves."
🌊
The Wave Visualisation: Explain "afwājā" to children using waves: "Imagine people coming to Islam like waves in the ocean — wave after wave after wave — thousands and thousands of people! Allah showed this to the Prophet ﷺ as a gift before taking him to Jannah." Children can act this out by rushing together like a wave — then sitting down saying "Alhamdulillah."
🤲
Teach the Prophet's ﷺ New Dhikr: After this Surah, the Prophet ﷺ said "SubhanAllahi wa bi-Hamdihi, Astaghfirullaha wa atubu ilayhi" constantly. Teach children this phrase. Say it together after every success — finishing homework, winning a game, completing memorisation. "This is what the Prophet ﷺ said when he won the biggest victory in history!"
😢
The Farewell Lesson (for older children 9+): Gently explain: "This was one of the last Surahs Allah sent to the Prophet ﷺ. When Ibn Abbas heard it, he understood it meant the Prophet ﷺ would soon leave this world. It's like a beautiful goodbye letter from Allah. The last word Allah said to the Prophet ﷺ in this Surah was: 'He is Tawwāb' — He always forgives. Even in saying goodbye, Allah's last word was mercy."
📖
Only 3 Verses Challenge: "This Surah has only 3 verses — can you memorize it today?" Give children 10 minutes. Most will succeed. Celebrate with: "MashaAllah! You now know the Surah of Victory! Whenever something hard seems impossible — recite An-Nasr and remember: Allah's victory comes suddenly and changes everything!"

Frequently Asked Questions
أسئلة متكررة
Why does the Quran command the Prophet ﷺ to seek FORGIVENESS after his greatest victory? +
This is one of the most profound teachings in the Quran. Scholars explain: (1) It teaches humility — victory must never produce arrogance. By saying Istighfar, the servant acknowledges that even their best actions fall short of Allah's true deserving. (2) It is the nature of worship itself — even the best of deeds contains human limitation. (3) It models the correct response to blessing: praise Allah (Tasbih) + acknowledge your own inadequacy (Istighfar). After this verse, the Prophet ﷺ said Istighfar 100 times a day — the most beloved human in creation, seeking forgiveness constantly. This is a mercy-lesson for all of us: if he did this, we certainly need it more.
What is "SubhanAllahi wa bi-Hamdihi" and why is it special after An-Nasr? +
"SubhanAllahi wa bi-Hamdihi" (Glory be to Allah and with His praise) is a combination of Tasbih (glorification) and Hamd (praise) — exactly what verse 3 commands: "fa-sabbiḥ bi-ḥamdi rabbik." After this Surah was revealed, the Prophet ﷺ added this to his bowing and prostration in every prayer (Bukhari 817). In a separate hadith, he called it "two words that are light on the tongue, heavy in the scales, beloved to the Most Merciful: SubhanAllahi wa bi-Hamdihi, SubhanAllahi l-Azim" (Bukhari 6682). It is among the most rewarding dhikr a Muslim can say — and An-Nasr is its Quranic origin.
How exactly did Ibn Abbas understand this Surah as a sign of the Prophet's death? +
Ibn Abbas (ra) — though young at the time — had exceptional insight. He understood that "when the victory of Allah comes" signalled the COMPLETION of the Prophet's ﷺ mission on earth. When a mission is complete, the servant is called back to their Master. This is why the instruction in verse 3 is not to celebrate or plan the next conquest — but to turn inward: glorify Allah and seek forgiveness, as one does when preparing to return to Him. Umar ibn al-Khattab heard Ibn Abbas's explanation and asked the Prophet ﷺ who confirmed: "He has spoken the truth." The great scholars like Ibn Kathir preserved this beautiful story in full detail.
Is An-Nasr recited in any specific Sunnah prayer? +
Yes — An-Nasr is part of the Sunnah recitation in the three-Rakat Witr prayer. The authentic Sunnah is: first Rakat — Al-A'la (Surah 87), second Rakat — Al-Kafirun (Surah 109), third Rakat — An-Nasr (Surah 110). This arrangement is narrated from the Prophet ﷺ in Sunan Ibn Majah and other collections. Witr is the prayer the Prophet ﷺ never abandoned even while travelling — and he consistently used An-Nasr in it. If you learn An-Nasr (Lesson 6) and Al-Kafirun (Lesson 7 coming soon), you will have the Sunnah Witr recitation complete with the addition of Al-A'la.
What comes next in the series — and will it get harder as Surahs get longer? +
Lesson 7 is Surah Al-Kafirun (109) — "The Disbelievers." It is 6 verses and one of the most important Surahs for understanding the Islamic position on religious freedom and the absolute rejection of shirk. After Al-Kafirun we continue through Al-Kawthar, Al-Ma'un, Quraysh, Al-Fil, Al-Humazah, Al-Asr, At-Takathur, and beyond — all the way eventually to Al-Baqarah. As Surahs grow longer, the lessons grow richer — more historical context, more themes, more word-by-word analysis, more teaching aids. Every lesson at Bilkisu Quranic Center will match the depth that each Surah deserves. Follow us at bilquranic.blogspot.com!
After the peace and victory of An-Nasr, we move to Surah Al-Kafirun (109) — "The Disbelievers." This powerful 6-verse Surah delivers the most uncompromising declaration of religious boundaries in the Quran, and is the Sunnah recitation in the second Rakat of Witr and Fajr Sunnah.
