Surah Al-Infitar describes four dramatic cosmic events marking the end of this world: the sky splits open, the stars scatter, the seas burst forth, and the graves are overturned. At that moment, every soul will know exactly what it has sent forth (of good deeds) and what it has left behind. The Surah then reveals the honoured recording angels (Kiraman Katibin) who write down every single deed, before closing with a description of the two ultimate destinations: the righteous in bliss, the wicked in Hellfire, on Yawm ad-Din — the Day of Recompense, when no soul will have any power to help another.

Welcome to Lesson 34! Surah Al-Infitar is a close companion to Al-Inshiqaq (Lesson 32), sharing the same opening theme of the sky splitting open at the end of time. But where Al-Inshiqaq focused on the earth flattening and personal accountability, Al-Infitar adds three more cosmic signs: the stars scattering, the seas bursting forth, and the graves being overturned to release their contents.

At the heart of this Surah is one of the most beautiful and sobering truths in the Quran: every human being has honoured angels (Kiraman Katibin) constantly writing down every single deed — nothing is missed, nothing forgotten. The Surah closes describing the Day when this record becomes reality: the righteous in eternal bliss, the wicked in Hellfire, and no soul possessing any power to help another — for on that Day, the command belongs to Allah alone.

Al-Infitar and Al-Inshiqaq — Companion Surahs

Al-Infitar (this Surah, 82) and Al-Inshiqaq (Lesson 32, Surah 84) both open with the same cosmic image: the sky splitting open at the end of time. Yet each Surah develops the theme differently. Al-Inshiqaq emphasises the earth flattening and personal accountability (kadihun ila rabbika). Al-Infitar expands the cosmic disruption to include the stars, the seas, and the graves — then pivots to a deeply personal question: “What has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Most Generous?” Together, these two Surahs form a powerful pair on the theme of cosmic dissolution and human accountability.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

إِذَا السَّمَاءُ انفَطَرَتْ

Idha s-sama'u nfatarat

“When the sky is split open.”

وَإِذَا الْكَوَاكِبُ انتَثَرَتْ

Wa-idha l-kawakibu ntatharat

“And when the stars fall, scattering.”

وَإِذَا الْبِحَارُ فُجِّرَتْ

Wa-idha l-biḥaru fujjirat

“And when the seas are burst forth.”

وَإِذَا الْقُبُورُ بُعْثِرَتْ

Wa-idha l-qubbru bu‘thirat

“And when the graves are overturned.”

عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌ مَّا قَدَّمَتْ وَأَخَّرَتْ

‘Alimat nafsun ma qaddamat wa-akhkharat

“A soul will know what it has sent forth and left behind.”

يَا أَيُّهَا الْإِنسَانُ مَا غَرَّكَ بِرَبِّكَ الْكَرِيمِ

“O mankind, what has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Most Generous?”

الَّذِي خَلَقَكَ فَسَوَّاكَ فَعَدَلَكَ

Alladhi khalaqaka fa-sawwaka fa-‘adalaka

“Who created you, proportioned you, and balanced you.”

فِي أَيِّ صُورَةٍ مَّا شَاءَ رَكَّبَكَ

Fi ayyi ṣuratin ma sha'a rakkabaka

“In whatever form He willed, He assembled you.”

كَلَّا بَلْ تُكَذِّبُونَ بِالدِّينِ

Kalla bal tukadhdhibuna bi-d-din

“No! But you deny the Recompense.”

وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكُمْ لَحَافِظِينَ

Wa-inna ‘alaykum la-ḥafiẓin

“And indeed, over you are guardians.”

“And what will make you know what the Day of Recompense is?”

يَوْمَ لَا تَمْلِكُ نَفْسٌ لِّنَفْسٍ شَيْئًا وَالْأَمْرُ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلَّهِ

Yawma la tamliku nafsun li-nafsin shay'an wa-l-amru yawma'idhin li-llah

“The Day when no soul will possess power for another soul. And the command, that Day, belongs to Allah.”

Kiraman Katibin — Honourable Recorders

V.10–11 pairs two words: ḥafiẓin (guardians) and kiraman katibin (honourable recorders). The angels appointed over every human being are not just neutral record-keepers — they are described as KIRAMAN (noble, honoured) themselves, reflecting the seriousness and dignity of their divine task. Every word you speak, every action you take, every private moment is being recorded by beings of the highest honour appointed specifically for this purpose. This should transform how a believer thinks about privacy: there is no truly private moment, and the ones recording are not casual observers but dignified, honoured agents of Allah.

Four cataclysmic transformations building toward one intensely personal truth. Idha s-sama'u nfatarat (v.1): the sky splits open — the same cosmic rupture described in Al-Inshiqaq. Al-kawakibu ntatharat (v.2): the stars, once fixed in their courses, scatter and fall — the entire cosmic order dissolving. Al-biḥaru fujjirat (v.3): the seas, once separated by barriers (as described elsewhere in the Quran, barzakh), burst forth and merge into one another. Al-qubbru bu‘thirat (v.4): the graves are overturned — their contents (the dead) released and brought forth. One of the most profound rhetorical questions in the Quran. Ma gharraka bi-rabbika l-karim (v.6): what has DECEIVED you concerning your Lord, the Most GENEROUS? Note the pairing: deception against generosity — the human being is deceived (by Shaytan, by ego, by heedlessness) into ingratitude toward a Lord described specifically as Al-Karim, emphasising how undeserved this deception is. V.7–8: Three divine acts — khalaqaka (created you from nothing), fa-sawwaka (then proportioned you, made you symmetrical and complete), fa-‘adalaka (then balanced you, made you upright and just in form). Fi ayyi ṣuratin ma sha'a rakkabaka: in WHATEVER form He willed, He assembled you — every human's exact physical form, however it appears, is the deliberate choice of the Creator. V.9: Kalla (No!) — the emphatic correction: despite all this evidence of a generous, deliberate Creator, the real problem is “tukadhdhibuna bi-d-din” — you deny the Recompense. The deception was never really about not knowing Allah exists; it was choosing to deny accountability.

The recording angels revealed, then the two destinations. Wa-inna ‘alaykum la-ḥafiẓin (v.10): indeed, over EVERY one of you, there are guardians. Kiraman katibin (v.11): honourable, noble WRITERS — not casual observers but dignified recording angels. Ya‘lamuna ma taf‘alun (v.12): they know EXACTLY what you do — nothing escapes their record. V.13–14: the two groups — al-abrar (the righteous) in na‘im (bliss); al-fujjar (the wicked) in jaḥim (blazing Hellfire). The Surah's powerful closing, using a rare double repetition for maximum emphasis. V.17–18: “wa-ma adraka ma yawmu d-din” is repeated TWICE, back to back — a rhetorical device signalling something of such immense, almost incomprehensible magnitude that even repeating the question emphasises human inability to fully grasp it. V.19: The final answer — “yawma la tamliku nafsun li-nafsin shay'an”: the Day when NO soul possesses ANY power to help another soul — not even the slightest thing. These four verses move through increasingly intimate scales of dissolution: the vast sky, the distant stars, the wide seas, and finally the earth itself (the graves) — each closer to human experience than the last. Then v.5 delivers the true point of it all: “‘alimat nafsun ma qaddamat wa-akhkharat” — EVERY soul will know what it sent forth and left behind. The grand cosmic collapse is simply the stage; the real event is intensely, unavoidably personal accountability for every individual life.

"Ma gharraka bi-rabbika l-karim" — question your own heedlessness: V.6 is one of the most searching rhetorical questions in the Quran. This invites honest self-reflection: what excuses, distractions, or false confidence lead us to neglect gratitude and obedience toward a Creator who has given us everything?

You are the deliberate design of a generous Creator: V.7–8 describes three acts — created, proportioned, balanced — and states your exact form was assembled however Allah willed. This should build gratitude rather than complaint about one's appearance, abilities, or circumstances.

Kiraman Katibin — live as if always observed, because you are: V.10–12 reveals honoured recording angels writing every deed continuously. This should inspire genuine awareness (muraqabah) — living with integrity in private exactly as in public.

The double repetition signals ultimate seriousness: V.17–18 repeats the same question twice — a rare Quranic device reserved for concepts of overwhelming magnitude. This should prompt deep, repeated reflection on the Day of Recompense.

"Wa-l-amru yawma'idhin li-llah" — ultimate trust belongs to Allah alone: The closing verse declares that on that Day, no soul can help another, and all command belongs entirely to Allah. This should reorient where a believer places their ultimate trust and hope.

Memorize Al-Infitar in 20 Minutes

Structure: Four Cosmic Events (v.1–5) → The Deceived Question (v.6–9) → Recording Angels (v.10–12) → Two Destinations (v.13–16) → Double Repetition Closing (v.17–19)

Five clear sections, 19 verses. The repeated refrains make memorisation more manageable.

V.1–5: The Idha Pattern (5 verses)

All four opening verses begin with idha (when). The repeated idha pattern locks the rhythm in quickly.

Ya ayyuha l-insanu ma gharraka bi-rabbika l-karim / Alladhi khalaqaka fa-sawwaka fa-‘adalaka / Fi ayyi ṣuratin ma sha'a rakkabaka / Kalla bal tukadhdhibuna bi-d-din / Wa-inna ‘alaykum la-ḥafiẓin / Kiraman katibin / Ya‘lamuna ma taf‘alun.

V.13–19: Destinations + Closing (7 verses)

Inna l-abrara la-fi na‘im / Wa-inna l-fujjara la-fi jaḥim / Yaṣlawnaha yawma d-din / Wa-ma hum ‘anha bi-gha'ibin / Wa-ma adraka ma yawmu d-din (v.17) / Thumma ma adraka ma yawmu d-din (v.18, exact repeat) / Yawma la tamliku nafsun li-nafsin shay'an wa-l-amru yawma'idhin li-llah.

⏱️ Total: 20 minutes. The exact repetition of v.17-18 means once you learn one, you already know the other!
