بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

يَا أَيُّهَا الْمُزَّمِّلُ

Ya ayyuha l-muzzammil

“O you who wraps himself [in a garment]!”

قُمِ اللَّيْلَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا

Qumi l-layla illa qalila

“Arise [to pray] the night, except for a little.”

نِّصْفَهُ أَوِ انقُصْ مِنْهُ قَلِيلًا

Niṣfahu awi nquṣ minhu qalila

“Half of it — or reduce from it a little.”

أَوْ زِدْ عَلَيْهِ وَرَتِّلِ الْقُرْآنَ تَرْتِيلًا

Aw zid ‘alayhi wa-rattili l-qur'ana tartila

“Or add to it, and recite the Quran with measured recitation.”

إِنَّا سَنُلْقِي عَلَيْكَ قَوْلًا ثَقِيلًا

Inna sa-nulqi ‘alayka qawlan thaqila

“Indeed, We will cast upon you a weighty word.”

إِنَّ نَاشِئَةَ اللَّيْلِ هِيَ أَشَدُّ وَطْئًا وَأَقْوَمُ قِيلًا

Inna nashi'ata l-layli hiya ashaddu waṭ'an wa-aqwamu qila

“Indeed, the hours of the night are stronger in impression and more suitable for speech.”

إِنَّ لَكَ فِي النَّهَارِ سَبْحًا طَوِيلًا

Inna laka fi n-nahari sabḥan ṭawila

“Indeed, for you in the daytime is prolonged occupation.”

وَاذْكُرِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ وَتَبَتَّلْ إِلَيْهِ تَبْتِيلًا

Wa-dhkuri sma rabbika wa-tabattal ilayhi tabtila

“And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with complete devotion.”

رَّبُّ الْمَشْرِقِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ فَاتَّخِذْهُ وَكِيلًا

Rabbu l-mashriqi wa-l-maghribi la ilaha illa huwa fa-ttakhidhhu wakila

“Lord of the east and the west; there is no deity except Him, so take Him as Disposer of your affairs.”

١٠

وَاصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَاهْجُرْهُمْ هَجْرًا جَمِيلًا

Wa-ṣbir ‘ala ma yaquluna wa-hjurhum hajran jamila

“And be patient over what they say and avoid them with a gracious avoidance.”

وَذَرْنِي وَالْمُكَذِّبِينَ أُولِي النَّعْمَةِ وَمَهِّلْهُمْ قَلِيلًا

Wa-dharni wa-l-mukadhdhibina uli n-ni‘mati wa-mahhilhum qalila

“And leave Me with the deniers, those of ease, and allow them respite a little.”

١٢

إِنَّ لَدَيْنَا أَنكَالًا وَجَحِيمًا

Inna ladayna ankalan wa-jaḥima

“Indeed, with Us are shackles and Hellfire.”

١٣

وَطَعَامًا ذَا غُصَّةٍ وَعَذَابًا أَلِيمًا

Wa-ṭa‘aman dha ghuṣṣatin wa-‘adhaban alima

“And food that chokes and a painful punishment.”

١٤

يَوْمَ تَرْجُفُ الْأَرْضُ وَالْجِبَالُ وَكَانَتِ الْجِبَالُ كَثِيبًا مَّهِيلًا

Yawma tarjufu l-arḍu wa-l-jibalu wa-kanati l-jibalu kathiban mahila

“The Day the earth and mountains will convulse, and the mountains become a flowing heap of sand.”

١٥

إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَيْكُمْ رَسُولًا شَاهِدًا عَلَيْكُمْ كَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ رَسُولًا

Inna arsalna ilaykum rasulan shahidan ‘alaykum kama arsalna ila Fir‘awna rasula

“Indeed, We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness over you, just as We sent to Fir'awn a messenger.”

١٦

فَعَصَىٰ فِرْعَوْنُ الرَّسُولَ فَأَخَذْنَاهُ أَخْذًا وَبِيلًا

Fa-‘aṣa Fir‘awnu r-rasula fa-akhadhnahu akhdhan wabila

“But Fir'awn disobeyed the messenger, so We seized him with a ruinous seizure.”

١٧

فَكَيْفَ تَتَّقُونَ إِن كَفَرْتُمْ يَوْمًا يَجْعَلُ الْوِلْدَانَ شِيبًا

Fa-kayfa tattaquna in kafartum yawman yaj‘alu l-wildana shiba

“Then how can you protect yourselves, if you disbelieve, from a Day that will make children white-haired?”

١٨

السَّمَاءُ مُنفَطِرٌ بِهِ كَانَ وَعْدُهُ مَفْعُولًا

As-sama'u munfaṭirun bihi kana wa‘duhu maf‘ula

“The heaven will break apart therefrom; His promise is ever fulfilled.”

١٩

إِنَّ هَٰذِهِ تَذْكِرَةٌ فَمَن شَاءَ اتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِ سَبِيلًا

Inna hadhihi tadhkirah fa-man sha'a ttakhadha ila rabbihi sabila

“Indeed, this is a reminder, so whoever wills may take to his Lord a path.”

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ تَقُومُ أَدْنَىٰ مِن ثُلُثَيِ اللَّيْلِ وَنِصْفَهُ وَثُلُثَهُ وَطَائِفَةٌ مِّنَ الَّذِينَ مَعَكَ وَاللَّهُ يُقَدِّرُ اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ عَلِمَ أَن لَّن تُحْصُوهُ فَتَابَ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْرَءُوا مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ عَلِمَ أَن سَيَكُونُ مِنكُم مَّرْضَىٰ وَآخَرُونَ يَضْرِبُونَ فِي الْأَرْضِ يَبْتَغُونَ مِن فَضْلِ اللَّهِ وَآخَرُونَ يُقَاتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَاقْرَءُوا مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنْهُ وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ وَأَقْرِضُوا اللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا وَمَا تُقَدِّمُوا لِأَنفُسِكُم مِّنْ خَيْرٍ تَجِدُوهُ عِندَ اللَّهِ هُوَ خَيْرًا وَأَعْظَمَ أَجْرًا وَاسْتَغْفِرُوا اللَّهَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Inna rabbaka ya‘lamu annaka taqumu adna min thuluthayi l-layli wa-niṣfahu wa-thuluthahu wa-ṭa'ifatun mina lladhina ma‘ak, wa-llahu yuqaddiru l-layla wa-n-nahar, ‘alima an lan tuḥṣuhu fa-taba ‘alaykum fa-qra'u ma tayassara mina l-qur'an, ‘alima an sa-yakunu minkum marḍa wa-akharuna yaḍribuna fi l-arḍi yabtaghuna min faḍli llahi wa-akharuna yuqatiluna fi sabili llahi fa-qra'u ma tayassara minhu wa-aqimu ṣ-ṣalata wa-atu z-zakata wa-aqriḍu llaha qarḍan ḥasana, wa-ma tuqaddimu li-anfusikum min khayrin tajiduhu ‘inda llahi huwa khayran wa-a‘ẓama ajra, wa-staghfiru llaha inna llaha ghafurun raḥim

“Indeed, your Lord knows that you stand [in prayer] almost two-thirds of the night, or half of it, or a third of it, as do a group of those with you. And Allah determines the night and day. He knows that you will not be able to do so, so He has turned to you in forgiveness; so recite what is easy from the Quran. He knows that there will be among you those who are sick and others traveling the land seeking Allah's bounty, and others fighting in the cause of Allah. So recite what is easy from it, and establish prayer, and give zakah, and loan Allah a goodly loan. Whatever good you put forth for yourselves, you will find it with Allah, better and greater in reward. And seek forgiveness of Allah; indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.”
