✨ Sabbih isma rabbika l-a'la — Five Divine Acts, Ease, Purification, Timeless Revelation
Surah Al-A'la opens with a command: glorify the NAME of your Lord Most High. Five divine acts justify this command: He created, proportioned, decreed, guided, brought forth vegetation, and made it dry stubble. A divine promise follows: We will make you recite and you will not forget. Then: We will ease you toward ease. Remember your Lord. Purify yourself. Prefer the akhirah over the dunya. It closes anchoring these teachings in the scrolls of Ibrahim and Musa — timeless revelation across all prophets.

Welcome to Lesson 29! Surah Al-A'la is one of the Prophet's ﷺ most beloved Surahs, recited in Jumu'ah and Eid prayers. It opens with the sublime Sabbih isma rabbika l-a'la — glorify the NAME of your Lord Most High — and immediately grounds this command in five divine acts of creation and provision.

The Surah makes a personal promise to the Prophet: sa-nuqri'uka fa-la tansa — We will make you recite and you will not forget. Then comes divine ease (yusrā), the command to remind, the path of the successful (tazkiyah + dhikr + ṣalāh), the dunya vs akhirah contrast, and a closing that roots everything in the ancient scrolls of Ibrahim and Musa.

Prophet's LoveThe Prophet ﷺ recited Al-A'la regularly in Jumu'ah and Eid prayers alongside Al-Ghashiyah. It was one of the first Surahs revealed. Abu Dawud narrates the Prophet ﷺ loved it greatly.
Five Divine Acts(1) Khalaqa — created. (2) Sawwā — proportioned. (3) Qaddara — decreed/destined. (4) Hadā — guided. (5) Akhraja l-mar'ā — brought out vegetation → then made it dry stubble (ghuthā'an aḥwā). Five acts covering all of existence: origin, form, purpose, provision, cycle.
Sa-nuqri'ukav.6: We will make you recite and you will not forget (illā mā shā'a llāh). Divine promise of Quranic preservation through the Prophet ﷺ. The Quran is from Allah's direct teaching, not the Prophet's memorisation effort.
Wa-nuyassirukav.8: We will ease you toward ease (yusrā). Connects to Ash-Sharh (L22): after hardship comes ease. This is a personal divine promise of facilitation for the Prophet ﷺ and a principle for every believer.
Tazkiyah + Dhikrv.14–15: Success = purification (tazakkā) + remembrance of Allah's name + prayer (ṣallā). Three interconnected acts building one another.
Scrolls of Ibrahimv.18–19: These teachings are in the ancient scriptures of Ibrahim and Musa. The message of tawhid, purification and preferring the akhirah is not new — it is the eternal message of all prophets.

Sabbih ISMA rabbika — Why the NAME?

The command is not “sabbih rabbaka” (glorify your Lord) but “sabbih ISMA rabbika” (glorify the NAME of your Lord). Scholars noted: glorifying the name means glorifying with full awareness of His attributes — conscious, informed, deliberate praise. The Surah immediately follows with five descriptions of what Allah does, so the glorification is grounded in knowledge. This is why we say “Subhana rabbiya l-a'la” in sujud: the direct application of v.1 in every prayer.

Qaddara fa-hadā — He Decreed AND Guided

V.3 pairs two acts: qaddara (decreed the measure of all things) + fa-hadā (then guided). This is profound: Allah did not just set destiny and leave creation to find its way. He decreed AND guided. The bee is guided to make honey. The seed is guided to grow. The human is guided through revelation. Divine guidance is not separate from divine decree — it IS part of the decree. The very fact that you are reading this lesson is part of your guidance.

“Glorify the name of your Lord the Most High. Who created and proportioned. And who decreed and guided. And who brought out the pasture. Then made it dry stubble.”
Five divine acts justify the opening command. V.1: Sabbih isma rabbika l-a'la: glorify the NAME — not just “glorify Him” but glorify with awareness of His names and attributes. Then five acts: Khalaqa = brought from non-existence. Sawwā = made perfectly proportioned (every creature perfectly balanced for its function). Qaddara = set the divine decree for all things. Hadā = then guided each thing toward its purpose — the bee to honey, the seed to growth, the human to revelation. Akhraja l-mar'ā = brought out green vegetation from the earth. Ghuthā'an aḥwā = then made it dark dry stubble. The full cycle: green life → withered death. This is the cycle of all creation — and a reminder of resurrection (the same power that revives the earth revives the dead).

Sa-nuqri'uka fa-lā tansā / Illā mā shā'a llāhu innahu ya'lamu l-jahra wa-mā yakhfā / Wa-nuyassiruka li-l-yusrā
“We will make you recite, and you will not forget. Except what Allah wills — indeed He knows what is declared and what is hidden. And We will ease you toward ease.”
Three divine promises to the Prophet ﷺ. Sa-nuqri'uka fa-lā tansā (v.6): The future tense sa- (We WILL make you recite) establishes that the Quran comes from Allah's direct teaching. The Prophet ﷺ will not forget it because ALLAH is preserving it through him. This is the foundation of the Quran's miraculous preservation. Illā mā shā'a llāh (v.7): the divine exception — whatever Allah wills may be changed or abrogated. He knows all that is declared openly and all that is hidden: nothing escapes Him. Wa-nuyassiruka li-l-yusrā (v.8): We will ease you toward ease. Yusrā = the ultimate ease. This connects to Ash-Sharh (L22): inna ma'a l-'usri yusrā — with hardship comes ease. The easing is not passive but active: Allah FACILITATES and smooths the path for the one He chooses.

“So remind, if the reminder will benefit. He who fears Allah will be reminded. And the most wretched will avoid it. He who will enter the greatest fire. Then will neither die therein nor live.”
Fa-dhakkir (v.9): So remind — the command to the Prophet ﷺ and every caller. In nafa'ati dh-dhikrā: if the reminder benefits. This is a conditional that scholars read two ways: (1) remind whenever there is any hope of benefit; (2) remind absolutely, since the reminder always benefits those prepared for it. Sa-yadhdhakkaru man yakhshā (v.10): the one who has khashyah (reverential fear of Allah) WILL be reminded. Khashyah is a deep, informed fear — not terror but awe combined with knowledge. Wa-yatajannabuhā l-ashqā (v.11): the most wretched (ashqā = superlative of shaqāwah = wretchedness) will avoid the reminder entirely. V.12–13: Al-nār al-kubrā = the greatest fire. Then: neither dying nor living therein — a state of perpetual torment with no relief of death and no true life. The worst possible existence.

Qad aflaḥa man tazakkā / Wa-dhakara sma rabbihī fa-ṣallā / Bal tu'thirūna l-ḥayāta d-dunyā / Wa-l-ākhiratu khayrun wa-abqā
“Successful is the one who purifies himself. And remembers the name of his Lord and prays. But you prefer the life of this world. While the Hereafter is better and more lasting.”
The formula for success in three interconnected acts. Qad aflaḥa: note qad + past tense = this success is certain, as if already established. Man tazakkā: purification (tazkiyah). Scholars identified this as Zakat al-Fitr before Eid prayer (which explains the Surah being recited in Eid prayers), but more broadly it is inner purification from sins, bad character, and attachment to dunya. Wa-dhakara sma rabbihī fa-ṣallā (v.15): three acts in sequence — dhikr (remembrance of the NAME) → then prayer. Dhikr feeds prayer. The heart that remembers Allah prays with presence. These connect back to v.1: the one who glorifies Allah's name achieves purification and regular prayer. V.16–17: Bal tu'thirūna: the contrast — but you prefer the dunya. The akhirah is KHAYRUN (better in quality) wa-ABQA (more lasting in duration). Two superiorities: quality + duration.

Inna hādhā la-fī ṣ-ṣuḥufi l-ūlā / Ṣuḥufi Ibrāhīma wa-Mūsā
“Indeed this is in the ancient scriptures — the scriptures of Ibrahim and Musa.”
The most powerful closing in Juz Amma. Inna hādhā la-fī: Indeed these teachings (emphasis: inna + la- both emphasising) ARE IN the ancient scriptures. Ṣ-ṣuḥufi l-ūlā: the first / ancient scriptures. Ṣuḥufi Ibrāhīma wa-Mūsā: the scrolls of Ibrahim (the father of the prophets) and Musa (who received the Torah). The message of glorifying Allah, purification, preferring the akhirah over the dunya — this is NOT new. It was in the scriptures revealed to Ibrahim and Musa centuries before. The Quran is the continuation of one eternal message, not a new religion. This closing establishes: tawhid, tazkiyah, and preferring the akhirah are the CORE of every divine revelation across all prophets and all times.

Five Divine Acts — The Grounds for Glorification

الأفعال الإلهية الخمسة
🌟
خَلَقَ فَسَوَّى
ACT 1 & 2: KHALAQA + SAWWĀ (Created + Proportioned)
He brought all things from nothing into existence, then made each creation perfectly proportioned for its purpose. Every creature, every cell, every galaxy is in exact proportion. The human body, the atom, the solar system — all sawwā.
🎯
قَدَّرَ فَهَدَى
ACT 3 & 4: QADDARA + HADĀ (Decreed + Guided)
He set the divine measure and destiny of all things, then guided each thing toward its purpose. Not just destiny without direction — He decrees AND guides. The bee to honey, the seed to light, the human to revelation.
🌿
الْمَرْعَى
ACT 5: AKHRAJA L-MAR'Ā (Brought Out Vegetation)
He drew green pasture from the earth — providing food for all creatures. Then made it dry stubble (ghuthā'an aḥwā): the full cycle of growth and death. The same power that revives dead vegetation will revive dead humanity on the Day of Resurrection.
🌿

Ghuthā'an Aḥwā — A Sign of Resurrection

The five acts end with: vegetation brought out → made into dry dark stubble. This is not just a description of the natural cycle — it is a proof of resurrection. The earth was dead, then Allah gave it life, then returned it to a dead state. The same Creator who can revive a dead field can revive the dead on the Day of Judgment. Ibn Kathir and other scholars noted this connection: the verse answers the objection of the disbelievers who doubted resurrection by pointing to a cycle they witness every year.

Lessons from Surah Al-A'la

دروس سورة الأعلى

✨ 5 Timeless Lessons

1
“Sabbih isma rabbika l-a'la” in every sujud: Every time you go into sujud in prayer, you say “Subhana rabbiya l-a'la” — this is the direct application of v.1. The Prophet ﷺ commanded us to recite this in sujud when this verse was revealed. Every prayer is therefore a living implementation of Surah Al-A'la. The believer who understands this never says “Subhana rabbiya l-a'la” mindlessly again.
2
“Sa-nuqri'uka fa-lā tansā” — the Quran's miraculous preservation: The promise that the Prophet ﷺ will not forget the Quran is the foundation of its preservation. It was preserved in his ﷺ heart, then in the hearts and writing of the companions, then across generations to today — unchanged. Over 1.9 billion Muslims today can recite the same words because of this one divine promise in v.6.
3
“Wa-nuyassiruka li-l-yusrā” — Allah facilitates ease for you: This is not a general observation but a divine promise of active facilitation. The path toward Allah is eased by Allah Himself. Every time you struggle with prayer, Quran, or good character, remember: the One who promised ease to the Prophet ﷺ is the same One who facilitates your path. Ask for yusrā (ease) and trust the facilitation.
4
The formula of success: tazakkā + dhikr + ṣalāh (v.14–15): Three interlocking acts. Purification (tazakkā) enables genuine remembrance (dhikr). Genuine remembrance drives real prayer (ṣalāh). And prayer in turn deepens purification. The three are a cycle, not a sequence. Starting any one of them strengthens the other two. The one seeking success begins here.
5
“Ṣuḥufi Ibrāhīma wa-Mūsā” — one eternal message: The closing roots everything in the scrolls of Ibrahim and Musa. Glorify Allah. Purify yourself. Prefer the akhirah. These teachings were not new with Muhammad ﷺ — they are the eternal core of all divine revelation. This means: (1) the truth of Islam is not arbitrary; (2) every prophet taught the same essentials; (3) the Quran is the final, preserved form of what every prophet brought. Islam is the continuation of the oldest religion, not the newest.

Virtues & When to Recite Al-A'la

فضائل السورة

✨ When to Recite

In Jumu'ah and Eid prayers: The Prophet ﷺ regularly recited Al-A'la in Jumu'ah (first rak'ah) and Eid prayers alongside Al-Ghashiyah (second rak'ah). Reciting it in congregation connects you to the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and fourteen centuries of the Muslim community.
🌿
In Witr prayer: The Prophet ﷺ also recited Al-A'la in the first rak'ah of Witr alongside Al-Kafirun and Al-Ikhlas. Using it in Witr deepens the night prayer with the reminder to glorify Allah's name.
🙏
In every sujud — “Subhana rabbiya l-a'la”: The direct application of v.1. The Prophet ﷺ commanded the companions to recite this in sujud when Al-A'la was revealed. Understanding this Surah transforms every sujud from a formula into a conscious act of glorification.

Memorize Al-A'la in 15 Minutes

احفظ سورة الأعلى
1

Structure: Command (v.1) → Five Acts (v.2–5) → Three Promises (v.6–8) → Reminder + Two Groups (v.9–13) → Success Formula (v.14–17) → Scrolls (v.18–19)

Six sections, 19 verses total. The Surah flows logically: WHY glorify (five acts) → divine promises to the Prophet ﷺ → reminder + two outcomes → success formula → ancient authority.

2

V.1 First: Sabhiḥi sma rabbika l-a'la

Five words. Shaddah on Sabhiḥi (Ḥa doubled). Al-a'la = Lam stays (Hamza not sun letter). You already say this concept in sujud — lock it in first. Repeat 15 times.

3

V.2–5: Five Acts (all rhyme in ā)

Khalaqa fa-SAWWĀ / Qaddara fa-HADĀ / Akhraja l-MAR'Ā / Ghuthā'an AḤWĀ. Notice: v.2,3,4,5 all end in the long ā sound: sawwā / hadā / mar'ā / aḥwā. This rhyme pattern locks them together. Repeat the four verses as one flowing unit.

🌿 All five acts end in ā — sawwā, hadā, mar'ā, aḥwā. Let the rhyme carry the memory.
4

V.6–19: Promises + Groups + Success + Scrolls

Sa-nuqri'uka fa-lā TANSĀ (v.6). Wa-nuyassiruka li-l-YUSRĀ (v.8). Then fa-dhakkir + two groups (v.9–13). Then qad aflaḥa man TAZAKKĀ + dhakara sma rabbihī fa-ṢALLĀ (v.14–15). Then dunyā vs abqā (v.16–17). Closing: Ṣuḥufi Ibrāhīma wa-MūSĀ (v.19, Madd Aarid).

⏱️ Total: 15 minutes. Al-A'la is one of the easiest Surahs to memorise due to its pervasive ā rhyme.

🌿 For Children — Allah Is the Most High!
Parents and teachers — these ideas work for ages 5–12
Subhana Rabbiya l-A'la in Sujud: "Every time we go into sujud in prayer, we say: Subhana Rabbiya l-A'la. That means: How perfect is my Lord, the Most High! Did you know this comes from Surah Al-A'la? Allah told us: glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High. And the Prophet ﷺ told us to say it in sujud. So every time you put your forehead on the ground, you are doing exactly what Allah said in the Quran!"
🌟
Allah Created and Made Perfect: "Allah created everything AND made it perfect. Think about your own hand: it has bones, muscles, tendons, nerves, blood vessels, fingerprints — all working together perfectly. Allah says: He created and PROPORTIONED (made perfectly balanced). Ask children to think of something in nature that shows perfect design. How does it show that Allah is Al-A'la — the Most High?"
🌿
The Grass Grows and Dries Activity: "Allah says He brings out green grass from the earth, then makes it dry and dark. This happens every year! In spring: green grass everywhere. In dry season: dried yellow grass. Then rain comes: green again! Ask children: can a dead plant come back to life? Allah can make that happen. If Allah can bring dead grass back to life every year, can He bring people back to life on the Day of Judgment? YES!"
🙏
Successful = Purified + Dhikr + Prayer: "Allah tells us exactly what makes a person SUCCESSFUL: 1) Purify yourself (keep yourself clean from bad things inside and outside). 2) Remember the name of Allah. 3) Pray! These three things together make a person truly successful. Not money, not fame, not power — but purification, dhikr, and prayer. Ask children: how can they do all three today?"
