A 5 Chapter Educational Study: The City & The Steep Ascent 🌙

Chapter 1: 🪜 The Steep Ascent - Verses 1-7
Theme: Allah swears by Makkah and establishes that human life is built on struggle.
١
لَا أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ
لَا أُقْسِمُ
I swear
بِهَٰذَا
by this
ٱلْبَلَدِ
the city
Meaning: I swear by this city —
Tafsir: Allah swears by Makkah, the sacred city where the Prophet ﷺ was born. This oath emphasizes its honor and significance.

وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۭ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ • وَوَالِدٍۢ وَمَا وَلَدَ • لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍۢ
Meaning: And you are free in this city. And by the father and what he fathered. We have created man in hardship.
Reflection: Life naturally involves struggle. Recognizing this helps us be patient and proactive rather than surprised by difficulty.
Chapter 2: 👁️ The Three Gifts - Verses 8-10
Theme: Allah reminds us of sight, speech, and guidance. With gifts comes responsibility.

أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ • وَلِسَانًۭا وَشَفَتَيْنِ • وَهَدَيْنَـٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ
Meaning: Have We not made for him two eyes, a tongue and two lips, and shown him the two ways?
Tafsir: The "two ways" refer to the path of good and evil, guidance and misguidance. Allah gave us the ability to choose.
Chapter 3: 💥 Breaking Through - Verses 11-16
Theme: The "steep ascent" is charity, freeing others, and caring for the vulnerable.

فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ • فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ • أَوْ إِطْعَـٰمٌۭ فِى يَوْمٍۢ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍۢ • يَتِيمًۭا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ • أَوْ مِسْكِينًۭا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ
Meaning: But he has not broken through the steep pass. It is freeing a slave, feeding on a day of hunger, an orphan of near relationship, or a poor person in misery.
Action Step: Identify one practical act of charity you can do this week. Small, consistent deeds break through the pass.
Chapter 4: 👥 The Two Groups - Verses 17-20
Theme: Two groups emerge based on belief and action.

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ • أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ • وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ • عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌۭ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ
Meaning: Then he was of the believers and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion. Those are the companions of the right. Those who disbelieved in Our signs are the companions of the left. Over them will be fire closed in.
Chapter 5: 🌱 Lessons & Application
1. Reframe hardship: Life’s difficulty is part of creation’s design. It’s not a bug, it’s a feature for growth.
2. Worship is practical: Freeing, feeding, caring are acts of worship, not optional extras.
3. Choose your group now: There’s no neutral in the akhirah. Your daily choices decide your company.

- Week 1: Give charity to one person in need, even small
- Week 2: Advise a friend to patience in hardship
- Week 3: Guard your tongue - speak only good or remain silent
- Week 4: Reflect nightly: Did I break through today?
